OK, what happens when you put the car in park?

The actuator moves a pawl down until it contacts a spline in the transaxle on my car. The pawl clicks into groves in the spline. When you go to try and unlock the pawl from the spline, the actuator doesn't successfully move the pawl away. Not a helpful error message as it gives you advice which might help before you parked the car but the error message occurs after you have the car parked. Once it occurs, it can happen anywhere. Mine happened as many as 300 miles and several days and many start stops between failures. A pLock malfunction may well be either a bent pawl or the actuator itself which mine was. Picture of the actuator itself once removed is in the Prius v section of these forums if you use the search function.Or I suppose could be a sensor. Can't tell you costs or complexity as it was done under warranty. I can tell you there were few parts in the US and it took the dealer 5 days to get the part.

Thanks a million for the tips. I have not had a chance to get the car scanned as yet but did some more checks.

And noticed a few things as mentioned before the car drives and goes into park fine. The error pops up about 10 seconds after I start the car.
What I noticed new is that with my wife's cars once I switch off right before the display goes off and the car powers down the park remains hilighted. On my car right before the display goes off the gear positions change the park is no longer hilighted and the B appears.

Trying to go tomorrow to get it scanned.

    Ok guys so some updates.

Last Friday i went to have the vehicle scanned. it was scanned with two models of diagnostic tools one called Launch and the other called FCAR.
they used two models of the FCAR one made in 2014 and a Brand new model out of the box.
all of the scanners showed all OK now DTC codes that were faulted.
we then decided to try looking at the Shift position actuator which has internal sensors to tell the ECU the parked or neutral position.
once we got the car on the lift we disconnected the battery and main breaker from the hybrid battery. we then removed the unit which is located to the from of the vehicles on the Synergy drive. (very easy to get to)
we checked the unit and then replaced it not too pleased with how its turning but had no replacement at that point so we put it back.
the car then did not want to start and gave a check hybrid system warning.
that same day we did not get it start, i think due to that we were tired.
On sunday the guy working with me on it tried a restart sequence not sure what it was but had something to do with the brake pedal and holding the power button for 45 seconds and then everything reset and the car went into ready mode.

so its starting and driving again but i am still getting the P lock warning. they are going to check again today with another scan tool and possibly going to get another Shift position actuator from a parts car to try switching.

So the struggle is real ....lol...but i don't give up and will keep you guys posted

    Ok guys. Happy New Year.

I have an update. I have not used the car since last i posted until this week. Again the car works fine however i am still getting the P lock malfunction.
I also got my hands on Techstream and a Cable. i tested this on my wife's' prius with is also a gen 3 and works like a charm, NO CODES there thank the lord.
however when i used this on my car i got the following codes.
    B1806
    B1807
    B1901
    B1906
I see all these relate to the SRS airbag.

I am glad i found this however i am confused now as to why this would cause the P lock malfunction.

any input at this point on how to deal with these airbag codes would be appreciated.

B1807: Short to GND in Front Passenger Side Squib Circuit
B1901: Open in Front Pretensioner Squib RH Circuit
B1906: Open in Front Pretensioner Squib LH Circuit

The only trouble areas common to all of these codes are wire harnesses and the center airbag sensor assembly, which is the main ECU for the airbag system. I don’t see any obvious association with the parking lock mechanism or the electronic shift lever system. The two systems both use the 12-volt power supply, of course. They might also have wiring that passes through the same areas of the instrument panel, and I suppose several wires could have been damaged or connectors loosened by a common cause.
Check the connectors, terminals, wires, squibs, and center airbag sensor assembly, using the step-by-step inspection procedures for each code in the Repair Manual (※). Be sure to follow the safety instructions in the PRECAUTION section under Airbag System. For some tests, the manual says to use the SRS check wire (special service tool 09843-18061), which has a 2.1 Ω resistance that simulates an airbag or pretensioner squib.

(※) You may already have the manual; if not, as I wrote in another thread:
