Thanks to a many of you in this board I’m about to trade my Gen3 Prius for a new 17 Prius Prime Advanced through a NY dealer to take advantage of the $4000 dealer cash.

Just wondering if anyone can weigh in on this...

I know I’ll need “transit plates” to get the car back to my home state but was told by the salesperson somewhat after haggling an OTD price that there’s a $300 cost for the paperwork (as it’s done/processed through another company). I went on the NY DMV and the cost is listed as $12.50 plus paperwork...?

I’ve never heard of a “fee” like this for filing out a 2 page form for the state. Again, it’s a NY dealer, so while I believe it’s just a last minute attempt to get some extra $ I wanted to see if anyone has any experience in NY or something similar with transit plates from an out of state dealer before I call them on it and possibly walk on the deal as I have other dealers at very similar pricing.

Illinois is .........not good to deal with.

You need to know EXACTLY what the dealer intends to file and where, then contact the DMV in NY and then Illinois directly.
WEB site information is general and may not apply to your situation at all.

You might have to pay a substantial amount in NY, mostly for sales tax, and then pay ANOTHER chunk to Illinois ......mostly to penalize you for stealing sales tax money from them. No joke.

IF......the dealer is doing ALL of that for you, so that you end up with Illinois registration and a clean Illinois title, those charges are NOT out of line. It wouldn't surprise me to see your overall savings end up being $1000 less than you expect.

AND......I hope that you are absolutely, positively sure that the NY "rebate" also applies to out of state residents.
If that is a factory incentive, it would be rather unusual for it to apply only in some states and not others.

Thanks for the reply....I’ve done my homework, plus I’ve been in the insurance industry for 20+ years so I’m used to dealing with Illinois/Indiana/Michigan for my customers - and while they can differ in fees/costs transit plates are normally a small nominal fee. Sales tax on the new car (if financed) is collected by the NY dealer on behalf of IL (or where the car will be registered) and sent to IL. You do not pay sales tax to NY on a out of state purchase. I, know as I bought a car a couple years back from another out of state dealer.

If I pay cash, no sales tax is collected at the time of purchase and then I’d have to go to the local IL Secretary of State Office to pay sales tax on the purchase as well as purchase my plates.

As for the NY rebate, that’s NOT applicable to buyers from out of state that plan to register/insure the car out of NY state.

I bought in NY and drove back to CO in June, using temp tags furnished by dealer. I paid CO sales tax and registration fee to dealer, who used a 3rd party to process paperwork. Dealer mailed final CO tags and registration papers to me, after 3rd party procured them from CO DMV. Fee was comparable to yours. I did not pay any NY taxes. Since CO is giving me $5000 for buying a Prime, I didn't quibble over dealer fee

BTW, I later noticed a waste tire fee of $2.50 for each tire. They charged me for 5 tires not 4!

You will need a transit tag issued by each state you plan to drive through. Pita. You also need to file the NY tax exempt form. (not on my desktop so don't have the number) it's part of the dealers paperwork. Almost everyone I can think of has either shipped their car or completed the transaction by mail and picked up in person with home state plates in hand. The latter is how I would do it. Can't think of any trades either.

Dealer handling your out of region tax sounds more like on behalf of the loan company for title holding and lien reasons.

My 3rd party is my Montana LLC.. I pay people there handle this stuff. They would mail me the plates or forward to the dealer for me to pick up when I got there.

Depending on your DMV $300 for someone else to deal with them might be a bargain.

They don't just transfer your plates from the trade-in to the new car as if you were buying in state?

The the transactions usually take 3 days with 2 Fedex overnights. One is the dealer Bill of sale paperwork to the out of state DMV via a third party and the second is the return of the registration/plates via the third party. If paying by cashiers check via overnight add a day.

Plates need to be valid on your trade in till you get there and then need to be registered to the new vehicle by your home DMV. So still needs paper work to be sent and received like above.

Many local police departments have cameras scanning license plates looking for felons and stolen vehicles. You really need your transferred plates to be updated in the NCIC database before you start driving around with them.

Still trying to sell some friends on a Prime. Weather not cooperating and it's so nice in Buffalo this time of year.

    Jerry,

Unfortunately they don't transfer the plates...If I purchased in Illinois (in-state) obviously they would...But there's currently low inventory and no dealer incentives in the Midwest region on the Prime(s).

Plus, Illinois; while there's no longer any state incentive on sales tax nor rebate/refund on EVSE install purchases/costs, the generous state of Illinois does give Electric vehicle owners the ability to purchase special plates that are $32 for a two year period versus the normal $101 annual plate fee...big savings, indeed! :D
