Why did you buy a plug in and not an electric car.

    With only the early REx enable coding, we've done 463 mi, 700 mi, and 700 mi with wife and two dogs. Since then I've added tank coding that brings the tank from 1.9 to 2.3 gallons. I also carry an empty, 2.5 gallon, Briggs and Straton, spare gas can. The 4.8 gallons gives the car a 192 mi, gas range.

    I keep looking for real mpg data on E-Power, but it seems hard to find. Adding the inefficiencies of a motor, a generator, and battery charge/discharge losses doesn't sound like a very efficient arrangement, but maybe running the engine under optimum conditions will make up that loss. Maybe we will find out eventually.

    I regularly drive 2-300 miles a day. When I initially bought my prime, I had a once a week 800 mile trip and no practical place to charge. Though I recently did manage to set up charging at home. Aside from a Tesla, at a significant price jump, I dont know of a pure electric that could come close to handle my daily use without taking breaks for charging.

    So this afternoon, I pulled around to my favorite charger in the alley just to see a young man park his extended bed, pickup in the charging spot with sign saying "EV Parking." The next two spots, close enough to reach, were also occupied. But knowing I had gas in the tank and plenty of charge, I drove to the market across the street and did our shopping.

    If I'd had a battery-only car, I would have been So Out of Luck (SOL) and had to consider confronting the pickup truck driver. But the engine and gas tank are built into the car so I am not dependent upon the reading skill and cooperation of others.

    That won't work. The typical violator simply doesn't care. So, they won't bother to read beyond the first sentence.

    You're best off with a short, memorable phrase along with an image.

    How about, "I siphoned all the gas out of your tank" along with a picture of the "Ev-only" parking sign?

    I don't buy the parked in front of the gas pump analogy.

    There are so many gas pumps' it don't matter.

    I used to go through this when I drove TDIs, where the only diesel pump would be blocked by either a gasser, or a diesel p/u and the owner would be nowhere to be seen. To this day, on the rare occasion when I might need gas, I won't block a diesel pump.

    Heavy commuter, is my reason. I don't have $80k to drop on a Tesla for the extended range so I settled for the Prime. Gets me to town and back with no gas used unless it's super cold outside. My job is 60 miles one way without a charger anywhere close to top off the charge, so I'm stuck with gas until the Prime dies and pure electrics come down in price.

    I told my wife if I worked another year we could pay cash for a Tesla S. She said no so we bought another another Prius. Lol

    A sprag clutch is a simple design that allows the two shafts to slip freely in one direction relative to each other, but lock up in the other. Sort of like how a wind-up clock works. It allows both motor-generators to be used to provide power to the wheels under high acceleration in EV mode. In earlier designs without it, trying to do this would have resulted in the ICE being turned backwards rather than applying power to the wheels; not a good thing. As I understand it, the clutches on the Volt are the conventional type, where two plates are pressed together to lock the two shafts.

    Have one of each. :)Waited almost a year to finally get the Prime ( have now had it I’ve a year and love it). Tesla 3 delivery next week which we waited almost 2 years to get. In the meantime we’ve been leasing a Leaf with an 90 mile range which confirmed our concerns about range anxiety with our 22 mile each way commute daily. The leafs range doesn’t cut it for our commute and requires daily charging which and takes 14 hrs on a 110 plug. You would think that would be at least two trips to the office and back but at 70 mph average with a/c or heat and headlights on but it doesn’t. It really comes down to what your needs are, your driving habits and your tolerance for range anxiety. You have to plan ahead with full electric vehicles. You can’t be out partying late and have an early commute with limited range....you won’t have enough time to charge the vehicle. This is why we have one PHEV and one electric. The Tesla’s range is 330 which will probably eleviate future range anxiety but I’m still not quite to the comfort level of owning only a full electric car given our current charging options in our state.
