Used 2005 Prius Advice

    I am a 3 time Prius owner. I've had a 2001, 2005, and 2015. Looking at getting a used prius for my son's first car. He learned to drive on the 2005 and liked it. I found another IDENTICAL 2005 model which I'm thinking about getting. However, I'm weary about getting this old of a car for my son. My biggest concern is the CVT belt and what the life of that is. I haven't been able to find out anything about the cvt; most articles are concerned with the hybrid battery life. Would appreciate some advice on the typical things that go can go wrong at this point in a Prius' life.

    Also here's a write up of the ad for the car. All the information is there. Would love some guesstimates on what the asking price is. The car is FSBO.

    Oil changed via CarFax every 4,000 Miles. Runs and drives very well. 165k miles I've done the following to it

    -Newer Refurbished Hybrid Battery (no papers however if it stays warm I will take off the cover and snap a picture of the date)
    -NEW GATES serpentine belt
    -NEW Lower Control Arms/Sway Bear Bushings
    -New Front Struts
    -Newer Tires
    -Fresh Oil Change
    -Fresh OEM Toyota WS Transmission Fluid
    -NEW Denso Spark Plugs
    -Fresh Brake Fluid Change
    -Both Air Filters Replaced
    -New Wiper Blades
    -Brakes Serviced and Slide Pins Lubed with Silicone Paste this weekend.
    -Fully Detailed

    No need for concern, there is no belt as the design of the Prius CVT is not what is commonly understood by that term. One of the reasons Toyota calls it an eCVT (electronic constantly variable transmission). The constantly variability is by way of a planetary gear set and some control computers which co-ordinates the two electric motors and the ICE to provide power to the wheels. Mechanically the eCVT is quite simple, but without computers it probably would not work.

    Without looking at the undercarriage, let us guesstimate 4k.

    The transmission in the Prius would not be my main concern.

    I would be wary of the "Newer Refurbished Hybrid Battery" until more proof is presented.
    I would want to see a receipt as proof of work done.
    You definitely need to know who did the job as well as the warranty.
    I would not trust anything about it without proof.
    It could easily be a piece of trash that will fail in a few weeks. Buyer beware.
    Many warranties are not transferable to a new owner.

    Look at Kelly Blue Book for general idea of pricing.
    It will get you in the ballpark at least.

    You have a great list of items that have already been taken care of already. I also agree with earlier comments about the HV battery. Any details you can get to clarify 'recently refurbished' would be helpful. You can also get a bluetooth OBD adapter and some android apps that will allow you to do some health checks on the battery for peace of mind.

    The 280k mile 2005 we own had the HV battery fail at 235k and front wheel bearing hubs replaced around 260ish.
    The 270k mile 2005 that got wrecked a year ago had a P0420 catalytic converter code (but was still 48-52 mpg)
    The 2007 with 165k miles had HV battery failure at 143k. No other issues.

    Maybe check/verify the AC is functioning.

    Thanks. For some reason, when I bought my 2001 I seem to recall a diagram of the CVT which had a belt. No matter the guy selling the car was a jerk and he couldn't provide paperwork for the hybrid battery replacement.

    The guy wanted $4800. He couldn't provide a receipt on the hybrid battery and was reluctant to give me the VIN. I walked on the first email message I received from him.

    Stay away from refurbished HV batteries! Refurbished batteries are not worth the risk for a buyer in the majority of cases. I would only buy a Prius that has a new replacement battery from Toyota (I would pay over KBB for this actually), or at least a replacement with newer cells (from 3rd gen and later, 2010 and up).

    There are forum members on here who have replaced refurbished batteries on warranty up to 3 times. There are many refurbishers who just replace the bad battery modules without proper balancing and matching which results in the battery failing shortly down the road. Also reports of batteries failing within a thousand miles, etc of installing a refurbished pack. Even those who do the work themselves often end up playing 'whack a mole' with the modules every 20-50k. Therefore I'd stay away.

    There are many forum members reporting failures in the 04 to 06 range. If I was to go for a 2nd gen, I'd go for an 08 or 09 for the newer batteries, even with higher miles. Age is as important as miles for the HV battery life.
