Prime vs. Hyundai Ioniq

    very similar to the Ioniq "sport" mode, remaps the gas pedal and reduces the assistance on the steering slightly

    Talk about your "self fulfilling prophesies"!
    On Saturday I watched "Driving Canada" do the Iconic EV.
    So a friend and I went to a Hyundai dealer this morning in "greater Edmonton". To look at one, and maybe the plugin as well.
    I was told "they won't sell in Alberta so we don't have them."

    Yup, they won't, if you don't have one, bozos!

    Still hewers of wood and diggers of coal here.

    .gov economy results are out, now we can discuss the 8.9kwhr battery and the 29mile range constructively

    Also appears to use 8.4 kwhrs if it’s battery for the range though a specific city highway metric would help comparisons a great deal

    Just like not offering the Prius Prime in all states won't help sell them in the states where they're not available to be looked at and test driven.

    Toyota is offering in all states they control IMHO they should seek to "buy out" the independent distributors.

    Nope, I always exceed the EV EPA rating on my volt by about 50-70 % might replace something else in the stable in a few years (cough Cobalt xfe)

    I missed out on
    1. $999 2010 Prius
    2. $5900 2011 Volt Premium
    3. $4000 Prius v (32mpg lifetime average)
    4. $10,999 2016 Prius one (typo?)
    5. $9000 Caddy ELR (dented passenger door)

    In the last month alone (I was packed and ready to get the 2010 but it sold)

    It always seems like the cheap cars come around in January/ February but I’m not ready yet unless an amazing deal shows up.
    Fact is I want to sell the Cobalt and move back to my Insight and not pick up/ trade into another car but cars are hard to sell.

    The 2011 Volt was very tempting also and was cheap enough to mod and tune for economy

    Now in a few years when sub $10,000 Primes, Ioniqs or other plug ins show up maybe then.
    I passed on a $6500 PIP last year as well, just not really in the market yet but I’m always looking anyway.

    Something cheap, dented and reliable might motivate me to move but my cars are all reliable and deprecated (except the Insight at the moment) so new tech doesn’t appeal to me much.

    Now a PHEV 2000 Insight ;)
    Too bad they don’t make those new.

    Perhaps I missed it .... but I'd like to read more discussion re the Prime vs. the Ioniq Plug-in.
    I like the looks of the Ioniq, and would like more discussion about it's positives and negatives.
    I have never liked the looks of the G4 Prius, although the Prime is a distinct improvement over the Prius hybrid.

    Months ago, I followed the Ioniq closely ... reading everything I could find (prior to the plug-in becoming available).
    One concern is I rarely see Ioniq's around town (and I actively It does not appear that the Ioniq is turning out to do much "Prius killing" as Hyundai had hoped.

    I'm not really in the new car market for about another year ... but right now I am interested in the Tesla 3. We shall see.

    Perhaps you might locate the nearest Ioniq and Prius Prime and over a weekend or so, visit the dealers for test drives. I've already done an Ioniq Blue test drive and have no interest in another.

    The Ioniq plug in only came out recently, and the hybrid model is currently supply constrained in the US(likely to do with management turnover for the US branch), which makes US owners posting not as likely.

    Trollbait - You will recall me saying previously that I respected your opinion. Have you read any positives or negatives about the Ioniq plug-in? I have seen a post or two that it is underpowered.

    Change of subject: What is your thought re. HUD's that are available? They are very in-expensive .... and one is even available on Amazon. I'm thinking it might be a viable option on the Tesla 3 if the center screen proves to be objectionable. OTOH, I don't look at the speedometer that often. When on a trip I set the cruise control and rarely look at the speed. Around town, I have found that the speed I am comfortable at is usually spot-on with the speed limit.

    I haven't really looked into it; my personal interest is in the Electric. What I have read has it sounding like it is a blended PHEV with EV only at speeds lower than the Prime and maybe the Energis. It might even perform shifts while in EV mode; the transmission is between the motor and wheels.

    If you want an EV with a back up ICE, the Ioniq PHV might not work for you. It appears to be close to the PiP in operation and efficiency theory. If you are fine with using grid electric to reduce gasoline burned, but don't care how it is done, then take a look.
    I have never used a HUD, and don't even consider it when looking at car features. I do place the Scangauge on the dash, above the steering wheel.

    I posted an Ioniq owner's bad experiences with his car, and the dealer. They used the warranty a lot, and parts are scarce! Doesn't sound like a good purchase at this time!

    My dad had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He insisted pies be cut in sixths, because otherwise "it was chintzy". There were 7 people in our family, we always had at least 2 pies.

    yep, not just US, but world wide, part of the issues is the in country distributors (Hyundai US, Hyundai UK etc) not getting the sales estimates right leading to low numbers of cars in various markets, due to that Hyundai korea set up the battery supply chain for that level of demand, the rest is history

    the other thing to note about the plugin variant is it tends to suit some markets better than others, in the UK we have far less distances between towns / cities than the US so the short battery range is more useful here than the US

    on the dark side we are now starting to see the plugin appear in the US so you may soon be able to get good feedback from local owners
