I got my prius prime for half year now, driving 80 miles a day in highways. I always use my cruise control to cruise 35 miles one way. On sunny California days, my cruise control will display no vehicle detected and turn off the cruise control while driving 70+ mph. It’s pretty scary while you cruising at that speed and start to slow down in a freeway. I wonder anyone had experience anything like this. What could be the cost of this problem. Windows are clean, there are cars in the front, no accident on the front number.

Toyota’s New Car Features book says the message “Cruise Control not Available No preceding Vehicle” appears when the cruise control system is in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode and “A preceding vehicle is not detected when follow-up control is being performed at a vehicle speed of approximately 40 km/h (25 mph) or less.” If you’re seeing that message at 70 mph, something is wrong.

I suppose you might try cleaning the front grille emblem, which is the cover for the millimeter wave radar sensor, with a soft cloth, as described on page 364 of the Owner’s Manual (PDF).

I’d suggest taking the car to a Toyota dealer for diagnosis, however. They should check for diagnostic trouble codes and inspect the millimeter wave radar sensor assembly, according to the procedure in the Repair Manual under Engine/Hybrid System: Cruise Control: Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System: How To Proceed With Troubleshooting. As proof this inspection has been done, you could ask them to tell you the Front Beam Axis Misalignment Reading and Front Beam Axis Offset Reading in the vertical and horizontal axes.

New Car Features and the Repair Manual are both available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com. If you’re technically inclined, you could do the inspection yourself, using a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system and two special service tools, Reflector C (09870-60040) and the Base Stand (09870-60010, sold in the 09870-60000 kit).

Happened once to me going 68 mph in a rain storm.

When I set the windshield wipers to max, the cruise turned off.

Had to drive with windshield wipers to next to max instead.

That might only make sense if the cruise uses the forward facing camera too. I thought that was just for collision avoidance.
Either way, it should be documented.

Thank you so much for the help. I will clean my front ember and try another week to see if that continues to be the case. I will take my car to the dealer next week to check and have my windows tinted.

Would you able to send more some diagnostic procedures from the TIS ? I had took a few classes in the t-ten program.

Sorry, I do not have a subscription. I believe there are some inexpensive options at techinfo.toyota.com though.

    Is lane departure engaged?
Has your 12v ever been drained.
Mine turns off when it's below 28mph and the preceeding car turns, but, turning off at maximum legal speed is worthy of your full cognizance, and Toyota's.

You're not suppose to use the cruise control in the rain.

im not proud of this but i had the radar cruse control set to 100+ as there were a lot of cars merging in and out of the left lane (AKA typical CA traffic.) besides i was averaging between 60 - 75 mph. not only did the cruse not disengage with merging cars but when a hole opened up i was waiting for a car to merge in front of me as normal with holes in traffic, but the car accelerated to over 90 before i pressed on the break.

TD.DR: Cruse will work up to (possibly over) 100 mph. i have first hand experience with this,

No I turned off my lane merging thing, it fight with me for the way that I drives. I like to choice which part of the road my vehicle in the lane. Sometime to the left some time to the right. That auto correction is too creepy to have it on.

With that much of miles driven each day I believed the 12 volts battery is very healthy, I will look into change the maximum legal speed in the system.

If I had set cruise control above 28mph the auto gas and break works like a champ, even in traffic. Doing it everyday.

It happens today again when a car merger out of the same lane as mine.

True you need to watch out for merging in cars, it will not disengage but it will slowly decrease speed(increase your range between the vehicle in the front.) Prox. 3 second delays. But if the front vehicle slows breaks. Your car will break for you as well doing those 3 seconds. You know how California driver love to cut in front of you during traffic hrs. I had my curse control on even doing 3mph traffic in the freeway.(work like a champ)If the merging vehicle is speeding up while merging, your vehicle speed will increase along with it.(only not exceed ur set limits speed)

This is a simi automatic driving machine. Love this function.
