Toyota C-HR

    My wife needs a new car within the next couple months because her current lease is almost up (non-Prius). This weekend we went to a Toyota dealership planning to check out the new Priuses but unexpectedly the Toyota C-HR caught her eye. She called it cute. Ok. If she's happy I'm happy. We ended up test driving it and she really liked it. I must say it's grown on me in the last 2 days. Interesting design inside and out. It felt a little non-Toyota like, that is, with its high quality plastics, a few minor leather trimmings, and a sleek dash somewhat akin to a European design.

    I hopped online and found this car did not get very good reviews given that it's underpowered. But then I watched some YouTube videos and the reviews were really positive. They said it handled well which was pretty close to what my wife said.

    What I find the most funny is that the salesman said he's never sold one. We were hoping to use that as leverage to score a crazy deal but we didn't end up buying anything since its still too early. Still the idea that its unpopular is a little scary, so I was very curious what the PriusChat community's thoughts were on this car.

    I like it but I might be closer to the targeted demographics lol.

    I do like the edgier design (I can see how some people might think there's too many angles). It definitely looks like a younger person's car (young professional/couple with or without small children) but it can also be an empty nester's car.

    The diamond motif is different but there are some harder plastics given it's still a lower cost vehicle. The shifter looks nice... looks like something out of a Lexus and the electronic parking brake is nice. I haven't driven it but I've also heard about the much better handling.

    The cargo area is decent for a car of this size. I'm not a fan of the rear seat. It's spacious but it's also claustrophobic with the small windows (due to the location of the rear door handle). But if you only carry adults in the rear, that should be fine.

    Thanks for the replies guys. I have to agree with every single thing you each said. My wife wishes there was a hybrid version too. It kills me that the Lexus UX isn't coming out til next year. We would definitely be interested in that car, as her current is a Lexus CT and as we know that was axed in the U.S.

    After a little more research I learned that the CHR was designed based on the Prius platform, which I think is really interesting. Might be why we're so drawn to it. It has a bit of Prius DNA after all!

    Toyota's new platform architecture is called TNGA; It is an universal/modular one. The Prius was the first model to use it, but that platform will be going into other models when their redesign time comes.

    The CH-R was coming to the US as a Scion originally, which is why we didn't get the hybrid version Europe gets.

    No. Because SUV. They know they can charge more (although I see that the US' prices for the NX300h is nearly the same as the IS and ES and cheaper than the ES hybrid. In Canada, it's the complete opposite. The NX300h starts at $14,000 over the IS, $11,000 over the ES, $8,000 over the ES Hybrid. So either your IS/ES lineup is more expensive or your NX hybrid is decontented and has a lower markup. Lexus Canada does mark up our hybrid models by quite a bit).

    I'm guessing $33k USD to start and if it's a hybrid, $35k USD.
