    Howdy all!,

I just bought my first Prius after much experience with them over the last 5 years. My work converted their entire fleet over to Prii about 5 years ago. My dad took one home and they let him test it out for a weekend. My dad and I drive over 114 miles round trip to work, So he was pretty excited to see an economical car that he could really relate to.So he buys one. Fast forward to last year. The engine on his Prius blew while going down the Turnpike. He pays to have a used one installed and that one blew too. Come to find out, it was the dealerships fault and they took the blame!! So after he has like 230K miles on this beast. They put yet ANOTHER engine in it that only has 80K miles on it! . He keeps it and buys a new Prius to replace the old one, then offers me the old one for $2K! So I have a 2010 Prius with an engine that really only has about 90 K miles on it. It was a sweet deal!

So far I am loving the MPG's ! My dad was rough on her, but I have been hypermiling and taking it easy after much reading on this forum. First trip into the city for me and I'm averaging 50.5 MPG, and its still climbing! I am SOOOOO excited!! My family has been struggling financially and my last commuter was a darn F-150 pickup! This is night and day for me. I'm saving like $400 a month in gas. mabe even more! Wooooo!!!Hooooo!!!! Give me some more of those Sweet MPG's , this is addictive. Its like a game! Lol

    Welcome!

Do you know is the engine is using any oil? I think that mileage may be getting close for some cleanup maintenance if that was not done at replacement.
If the car is using some oil, an oil catch can might be a good idea to capture some liquids preventing head gasket issues.

Its not using any oil that I know of. I check my cars once a week, so I will find that out soon.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

    Some questions:
    • What was the failure diagnosis on the previous engines?
    • Has the egr system ever been gone through?
    • Did the engine replacement include the egr system replacement?
    • Has the transaxle fluid been changed?
    • How is the hv battery performing?
    Sounds like a great deal;).

    Keep us posted (y).

My head is spinning, can't keep count: is it engine number 4 now? I'd echo all the above questions. Maybe hard driving??

Engine #3. Original blew, replacement blew (because they installed it wrong), now were on #3 . My dad drove her pretty hard. They went over that car with a fine tooth comb after installing engine #3 because they messed up so bad it cost them ALOT of money. Not sure about EGR system, not sure about transaxle fluid, HV battery is doing great. I replaced the starter 12V battery when I got it. It was dead. Since then, she's been purring like a kitten. all the new parts in her, she could probly go another 250K miles. Lol

By the way, the 12V does not start the engine. IT boots up the computers & closes the relay to the HV battery. The HV battery is used to start the engine & recharge the 12V battery.
I hope you got a battery that vents to the outside, like the OEM. You do not want battery fumes in the passenger area.

Oh it's OEM alright. It was almost $200.00 Most expensive 12V I have ever bought.

There's several other batteries that are dimensionally identical, have the proper vent port.

The dealer practically forced me to sit through demonstrations of the radio and other self-explanatory stuff that was a complete waste of time before turning over the keys. It wasn't until I was in this forum for several months that I finally got a handle on the 12v system, ON mode, ACC mode, etc. *That's* useful knowledge.

My salesman actually showed the useful safety features and other things. He owns a Gen 1 Prius so he values the uniqueness.

That is Canadian dollars unless you did a currency conversion. An international user that does not give a reasonable location will just cause confusion here.

Besides the conversion rate there's often the "Canadian Premium". @presspony : "nunyabusiness" is a bit vague, and pointless if you mention Canadian dollars, sport BC plates and so on. Non-specific location is very helpful to responders.

I just saw a blob in the centre of the license plate. The font used did not help me identify the location either. I am sure that is true for the vast majority of people here.

Google the just readable dealership on the license plate (you have to just loosen up, trust your hunches, don't look too close, to read it, an odd process), and that's a BC plate btw. Not that it's any of my business. :sneaky:

    Rhymes with "Shmeshtination"...:cool::whistle::whistle:

Helps if it's a dealer you happen to know of, eh?..:ROFLMAO: This happen to be the place where you buy your TGMO in bulk?

No, my go to place is Open Road Toyota in Port Moody, and I really appreciate they do this, at rock bottom prices too. Bulk motor oil for DIY is a good idea, I really hope it catches on, cut down on all the empties. Yeah, but that other place is also in Greater Van.

Getting oil has become an "event", we take our dog along, and head from the dealership down to nearby Rocky Point park, where we all have ice cream. They have deal for dogs: ice cream "base" with a doggie biscuit in a dish. :)
