German future banning older diesels

I liked the signs that said "healthy driving" in a similar article I read. Makes the case for Prii, Prime and BEV.

My understanding is Bosch wrote the common code that enabled the ‘cheats.’ IMHO there could be a valid civil suit by a large number of diesel ‘friends’ against those individuals and Bosch.

Just another nail in the coffin for the oil burning pollution machines. Ironic that this ruling comes down in the very country that perpetrated the scandal. That should help to sell more of them, don't you think?

 

That was my understanding as well. However, more specifically, what I think I remember reading somewhere (can’t recall where) was that the code that Bosch wrote, but warned repeatedly not to use in production vehicles (or so they claim at least), was not the code VW used in cheat mode, but what VW used in normal, higher-performance/economy, and higher-pollution, operation.

If you go back 20 years, the original idea over there was to force refineries to produce ultra-pure super-hydrogenated diesel fuels to reduce emissions ( a much higher degree of treatment above and beyond total sulfur removal). I do not know exactly why, but I do know they decided to back off and focus more on total sulfur removal. Presumably older diesels still inherently make too much NOx regardless of fuel quality. The rationale for sulfur removal is to enable better performance of the post-treat catalysts on the vehicle, not to mention, in the case of diesel, reduced particulates.
