I was expecting my auto insurance to go down a couple hundred dollars per year. Well, I saved $30 per year lol

I know this is very YMMV but Im going to call my Ins too see whats going on.

Did you save any money on yours?

The fact that it is a new concept car with so much tech and a plug in might make a difference to insurance companies. They think you might burn the house down charging.

pshaw! Michigan has the highest insurance rates in the country $980.00 per six months $1000.00 deductible. Shopped around and found that AAA is the cheapest for me:rolleyes:

I was paying $1000/ yr with Geico. Been with them for almost 10 years. They kept increasing their rates every year. I just recently switched to Liberty Mutual. Now I’m only paying $670/yr with the same coverage.

why would you expect a new car to have lower insurance than the car you were driving, safety features?

The Prime does not have a track record, so insurance goes somewhat like this:

Liability by car size and weight
    Comp and Collision by MSRP

    Then factor in:
    Your state and local factors
    You the driver.

I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but insuring our 2017 Prius Prime costs about the same as insuring my stepdaughter’s 2016 regular Prius, which in turn is somewhere around 3/4 more than insuring our 2009 Prius.

Somebody mentioned the carbon-fiber tailgate being expensive to replace, but also, in an earlier thread, somebody else mentioned that, although the Advanced’s ultrasonic sensors reduce the chances of collisions, the sensors themselves make such a repair more expensive.

Another “interesting” (read, “annoying”) consideration is that you having a superb driving record doesn’t stop folks with their by-definition-average driving records rear-ending you, necessitating replacement of the carbon-fiber tailgate.

I have the same issue with Geico, excellent history but paying $900 for 6 months. BENAGI, I did talk to progressive and they gave me a quote of $580 for 6 months, but in fineprints it was written that over $350 was for one time promotion. So next 6 months renewal will be key

you can never go by new customer offers. you have to talk to people who have been with a company for awhile, and get details of cars, driving histories, ages, and etc.

Insurance rates differ here in Indiana depending on what county you like in. We are close to Chicago, just one county west and you are in Illinois.

Pluses include the safety features and the unlikelihood of it being stolen.
Minuses include the cost of repair parts, likelihood of front or rear damage in case of a heavy bump.

It is always a good idea every few years to check other insurance companies for their policy costs. I bundle the home, earthquake, umbrella, cars, rent house, and motorcycle, and ask one or two other companies to give me a price for the bundle. It is more convenient for me to have them all under one company, and discounts may apply. Safeco does OK. Amica was higher for some, lower for others, net was about the same. Farmers was higher. I'll try USAA next year.

Good luck with that. I switched to LM a few years ago when I got a similar great rate. Next renewal they upped my rates SUBSTANTIALLY claiming that something had changed in my "record". The fact was NOTHING at all had changed. No tickets, no accidents, no insurance claims of any kind, excellent credit (I even pulled my insurance score--excellent), no moves, no children born so on. This was a classic bait and switch so I bailed to Geico. Been with them now 6 years I have accident forgiveness at NO COST. My rates have been very stable ($1050/yr 2 cars, high Liability, full coverage, but no towing/rental reimburse).

I can understand when there is an actual change which might affect your risk factor, but their action in raising my rates after a single policy period (6 months) was extremely unsatisfactory. They rely on people simply being too lazy to check their rates and make changes. I shop EVERY single renewal for homeowners and auto insurance. In 6 years I have never found a rate lower than Geico for auto ins.
