On long trips where going faster does make an actual difference, how can I keep my MPG up while still getting there quickly? Thanks!

    Basically, you can't.
Quick or efficient... we can only choose one. :(

There is no more effective plan than wash the car, and that is not very effective.

I thought about it when you first posted, and the best I could come up with, was to reserve your high speed for downhill sections, where you're basically coasting.

Does this involve breaking the speed limit? Just fugedaboutit, play it safe.

Install a cloaking device to phase through the air without any resistance.

Then again it might take more power than it's worth...

Thanks, I tried a high speed pulse and glide, 75-80 down to 70. It works decently and still over epa mpg

I have tried this before and not only is it unsafe but I didn't see any real gains over about 3 tanks even though the theoretically 10% to 20% is possible. Now the phasing idea is much better, I'll have to try.

    Also an XL

    LOL!! We'll want pictures. (y)

But I think that if you live in Texas or Oklahoma, the dimples come for free with no effort on your part other than having the glass replaced and getting new shingles and siding on your house. It's a frequent phenomenon in those areas known as hail. :)

Drive in a caravan of cars where you can reduce wind resistance. But then again, you'll increase the chances of an accident.

Keep the AC and heat turned off. Keep the radio off and drive in the day so the lights can be turned off, too. You'll still get very good fuel economy when going above the speed limit, compared to other cars.

For you, it appears that saving time seems to be worth 5-8 mpg on a trip. I used to be in that boat during my younger days. I eventually got tired of speeding tickets, attending driving school, had some near accidents, etc...

Has anyone tried filling the rear with helium balloons to decrease weight/rolling resistance? :D
