Prime Charging

    Fortunately and unfortunately they don't have. I cannot drink a cup of coffee and I save a few bucks since I don't drink a cup of coffee.

    They have magazines and books, and they have tables, chairs and sofas. I have not been in libraries for so many years except picking up or returning books kids. It is really nice to go to libraries just like good old days and stay for 1-2 hours.

    EV is the future, but PHV is for current:) I am on a trip from Sacramento to Death Valley then Las Vegas through 50 then 395. It is not possible with Tesla or Bot yet, just not ready.

    And the author of the article was even in Southern California. There is nothing like that infrastructure here in the Midwest. However, we are courteous. I've had good luck asking at the front desk of my hotel about charging the car. Every time they've gotten the maintenance folks to run an extension cord out from a 110v wall socket that allows me to charge overnight. Just had to ask.

    You hit the nail on the head! You just have to ask! When Janet and I went on our little trips, in Southern California, I'd ask at the motels/hotels if I could plug in; in almost all cases they were able to accommodate me. It was great!

    The stories in this thread highlight the vagaries of L2 charging away from home.
    A BEV is a different animal, and a Tesla BEV even more so. Then charging away from home is really only for long trips and done at Superchargers if you are fortunate, or at DCFC otherwise.

    So you can't plug-in unless you drive a Tesla, or other "committed electric"!
    My most delicate comment is, "Bite me, Beverly Hills!" These arrogant jerks are obviously trying to foster a feud between electric car categories!! More rich elitist snobbery!!

    I mentioned Teslas because they are expensive (suited to Beverly Hills "Richies"), and I do inevitably see1 or 2 at multi-charger facilities like malls. I shouldn't pick on success, and it's really the Beverly Hills community who are the bad guys here. Like you said, it's the case of a solution looking for a problem. As far as people being ignorantly selfish by overstaying the Charger parking spots, that's a matter of education; this stuff is very new and we're all just learning. Like the idiots who text while driving, or use the phone at bank teller windows , or grocery checkouts; eventually, most of them will "learn proper behavior".

    Here is a short video clip of the committee chair explaining his rationale. I don't know if his arguments are supported by facts but he says that charger spots are limited and should be reserved for cars that are stuck without them.

    Honestly, my opinion is that whatever his actual motivations the result will be L2 infrastructure neglect from lack of use.

    I think every side in this argument has a valid point and decent motivations. We probably shouldn't be calling people names when we don't know them, their story, or their motivations.

    Probably, and always a fair position to err on the side of politeness and decency.

    I will say though that the guy waited until the last moment before a vote to present his amendment without time for fact checking or informed discussion so this smells an awful lot like back-room politics. I don't have a strong opinion on the subject (though as an up and coming Tesla owner I tend to disagree based on what I wrote above) but his methods are not respectful.

    Well ... and on second thought I'm in favor of B.H. returning the grant money they received for these charging stations if they want to restrict use to a sub-set of plug-in cars.

    I think, using very kind words here to not offend, this guy is full of bull manure!!
    He obviously has an agenda, as he speaks and compares charging stations to police officers, and other valuable resources. My sense of this dolt is that "they've shoved this grant down our throats, and we're gonnna(sic) show them!!" If we can make this thing fail, we can then tell them, "I told you so!!" I wonder which model of Hummer this jerk owns. If we ponder for just a moment we realize that a huge percentage of EV-powered vehicles is the plug-in hybrid. Why blow them off; you're already ripping people off with all these parking fees and penalties; aren't you doing enough to screw with this OPPORTUNITY to promote electrification of our cars. I think that this bozo needs to go work for Scott Pruitt. But, hey, I don't have any opinions!!

    It is hard to escape the suspicion that this guy wants to remove the charging and turn the spots into money makers for the city. But perhaps not; a short video clip is just not enough to parse what is really going on there. And it is always wise to remember the advice to "not ascribe to malice that which can be explained by stupidity."

    I figure replying to your post is as good as any, I'm trying to add more information about charging my Prime. I was near my son's soccer game field, when I decided to charge my Prime at a nearby Volkswagen dealership. I wanted to stay in the Eco Dashboard contest, so I went to this Volkswagen dealer to find out that they charge a flat $4.99 fee to charge your car.
    Not only was this an outrageous fee to recharge my now "empty" battery, after 5 minutes the charge rate went to about half of what it was normally. The claim was made that because there were two cars connected to this charge station it caused the rate to go to half of normal; there was no other car; what a scam! To really take the cake, their Honda dealership was charging $9.99 per charge! Now you could say well maybe a Leaf, or a Volt, or a Bolt, could benefit from this scheme. The problem is that after 5 minutes the rate of charge goes down to half of normal which would make the charge time for these vehicles something like 5 to 10 hours; I was too mad to do the math. I did manage to find an Irvine City charge station not too far from this place, and was able to continue charging for about $0.30 per kilowatt-hour. I had stayed with the ridiculous VW dealer to get the 8 miles or so to make it to the Irvine ChargePoint station.
    I notified chargepoint, who were glad to help me and even credited me back my $4.99. They said they "would report the stations." These little impromptu surveys of mine do point to the fact that there are some serious problems with the charging infrastructure, and if you own a Bev, and drive like me, you are in deep trouble!
    Man I love my Prius Prime!

    I really don't know that much about the Tesla's; they generally don't hang out where I go. I still wouldn't want to be beholden to one source of charging, especially since they require such a large amount of charge to keep running. You really have to be an electric car ENTHUSIAST to survive on public charging here in Socal.
