Arg...our son was driving and was backed into while leaving a gas station. Apparently the other driver had six (yes..SIX) other people packed into a Toyota Yaris and was obviously not looking when they gunned it out of their parking space. Passenger side of the car is pretty much toast :

    IMG_4952.jpg IMG_4951.jpg IMG_4950.jpg IMG_4949.jpg

Police report....and the other driver...agree that it was the other drivers fault. *However*, apparently the police could not issue a citation because the accident happened on 'private property'....very odd. It will be very, very unfortunate if my son gets stuck with a 'partial fault' situation even though it was clearly not his fault. He was pretty much at the 'wrong place at the wrong time'.

We can only hope now that the other driver doesn't change their story. I also am not convinced they even had proper insurance coverage because the driver had no proof of insurance in the car at all. Her mom eventually showed up with insurance info...but the insurance card did not match the car she was driving (I did not notice that at the time). I can only hope that the car she was driving is on that policy. Sigh..

    Sorry to hear this:(.

Looks like they got one of @Mendel Leisk ’s favorite wheel covers too:cool:.

Hard to tell in the pics, but it looks like a serious paint rub.

    Keep us posted (y).

Doesn't really look that bad. My mom did something similar to her red prius, I just bought 2 red doors from craigslist and replaced them. The fender on yours could use replacement too.

Unfortunately it is far more than just a paint scuff on the doors. There is also damage to the front and rear quarter panels ( I think that is what they are called anyway ). Also look at the 4th picture...which is a pic of the rear passengers side wheel. Isn't that damage to the unibody..or is that part of the rear quarter panel?

Part of the rear quarter panel.

How many miles you got on it now?

I’d fix whatever I could with Parts from a salvage yard from the funds collected from the other insurance company.

Or I’d keep the funds and live with it.

We'll see what the insurance companies say. Like I said, since there wasn't an official citation on the other driver...I don't have a great feeling about it. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid though. I just hope the other driver *has* insurance ( for reasons described above ).

Your son get any information from the “at fault” party, like license plate, registration, name, any pics of the other car, etc?

Might come in handy if they don’t “own up” to their mistake.

If they don’t agree and if you have the time, a small claims trip might help the other side learn a valueable life lesson(y).

Regarding the incident: It's not unusual that there wasn't a citation issued -- there were no traffic laws broken, just simple property damage. If the other party does indeed have insurance, it should be covered without any issue. If police were called, there should be an incident report filed. Did the officer on the scene give you any paperwork?

Regarding the damage: As others have indicated, the front fender, and both doors are DIY replaceable as they simply unbolt from the body, for replacement. The small "dog leg" section between the rear door and the rear wheel-well is not as simple. That will require professional body work to restore it to before-accident-condition.
I'm a DIYer, so if this were my car (or my child's car), I'd do what Ray suggetsted: take the insurance money, buy two doors and a front fender from a salvage yard, buff out the "dog leg" at the rear wheel well, and pocket the difference. (The difference should be substancial $)

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

BTW - thought I'd update on the status of this.

As far as insurance goes, the other driver ignored repeated attempts at contact from *both* companies. When all was said and done, the other driver was 100% at fault due to inaction. They resorted to going off of the police report and my son's statement. If the other driver had made *any* statement, my son would have been partially at fault. Very, very dumb thing for the other party to ignore it like that...but I'll take it! (y) However, the other driver's insurance company said the 'ignore and maybe it will go away' thing happens far more than you would expect. o_O. The only downside was the very long wait for the other insurance company to finally admit that they were never going to get any response from their policy holder.

As far as the repair goes, I took it to a very small shop...and I know the owner. It turned out fantastic. All panels on the passengers side were replaced, as well as the headlight, taillight, front bumper, rear bumper, and doors. In fact, the body of the car is now in better condition than when we purchased it used a few years ago.

So all in all this turned out far better than I anticipated. I'll try to post a few pics at some point.

Now the only issue with the car is oil consumption...but that is a discussion for another time.

    That's excellent!

I never DIY car repair, just insurance up, and take my lumps when they come, let the body shop work their magic.

You can still put in a claim for diminished value due to the accident and get a little money to address the oil burning issue
