Stolen NON-SKS KeyFOB Question

    Hi all, long time reader, and searched this topic without success. Hopeful the community can help me with an answer to this issue.

    A family member was careless and had their 2008 Prius KeyFOB with the black back (non-SKS) stolen and I am in the process of receiving a new keyfob to replace this one. Thankfully, I have made a duplicate keyfob prior to this unfortunate incident.

    If I go thru the steps to add the new keyfob, will it "disable" the use of the one that was stolen? If not, what would I need to do to ensure the stolen keyfob would not work on this car.

    Hi and welcome to PriusChat.

    No, it wouldn't. You would need to do a process that deletes all keys except this one (one of the working fobs you have), then you add back the other fobs you still have using the "Chicken Dance".

    The function to delete all keys except this one, can be done through Techstream (if you have it), by the dealer, or by a licensed automotive locksmith. I vaguely recall (but don't rely on my memory) there also might be a different chicken dance to accomplish this, but have no other information, so you'll need to research that yourself.

    There are so many prius cars out there, chances are the stolen fob won't find its way home

    ... unless the theft was targeted.

    There is also the issue of whether to replace the lock barrel, as the stolen fob has a physical key that will still open the door. If you remove the key fob from the system, you stop them being able to drive the car, but not getting into the car, unless the key barrel is also changed.

    Hopefully the careless party lost the keyfob.....but a targeted theft would be a concern

    Thank you for the quick reply dolj!

    I will look research for the way to erase the stolen keyfob. If found, will post up in the thread in case anyone else needs it in the future.

    Unfortunately, you are correct — it was targeted. The physical key stolen was also a blank and I have the only copy of the physical key for the car.

    I wasn't able to find a different chicken dance and went ahead ordering the J2534 cable and techstream software from the "electronics bay" to accomplish what needs to be done.

    This video will be used --
