i wonder why it didn't recognize the crosswalk and pedestrian, seems pretty basic.

article is confusing. why is cruise denying they and the driver did nothing wrong? they state that the pedestrian was 10.8 feet away, but what does that have to do with the crosswalk question?

Whatever happened to "pull over to the right for sirens and lights"?

Many here seem oblivious to the need to give way to the gargantuan vehicles with the cool sound and light shows.

You guys are backwards. For you it would be "pull over to the left" ;)
@alanclarkeau needs to do it while driving upside down. o_O

When I replayed the video, it was apparent the solid white line went to the left and there was a totally faded white line to the existing lane. So in effect, the car was fooled into thinking this was just another lane. Look at seconds 0:27 to see the right lane markers fade from the Tesla display.

Now it is a valid question if the dashed lane markers should have priority, more credibility, over a solid line.

At seconds 0:31 the lane markers when away at the same time the car aggressively began braking. There was no evidence the barrier was detected BUT the system display would not show that when manual control took over. I noticed the steering wheel motion suggested a left turn. The auto driving indicators came off suggesting the driver steered towards the barrier.

What lane markers on road must not present an ambiguous visual image. But it also suggests stopped object detection in a lane may need review. The flat-black barrier cover also contributed.

why would your hands be off the wheel if auto pilot tries to crash into the same barrier eveytime you approach it?

Yeah, I was wondering the same: If he’d noticed the problem before and had complained about it, then why didn’t he override AutoPilot, or potentially even disengage it? As far as I’m aware, and have seen on a couple test drives, AutoPilot *always* lets you override its actions.

Issue must be on your end. Although videos involving Tesla have been yanked before, it's still there.

And this video shows the fatal Autopilot crash in China, in which the driver plows into a stopped street sweeper.

My understanding is that Tesla has no way of confirming whether or not AutoPilot was on or not in this particular case.

The regulation is to give pedestrians 10 feet of space. The article is unclear, but I'm reading that as the car let the person cross, and started on its way once the person was 10.8ft from it.

What does the flashing border of the dash display mean?

Tesla (TSLA.O) said on Wednesday that one of its cars had crashed in Beijing while in ‘autopilot’ mode, with the driver contending sales staff sold the function as ‘self-driving’, overplaying its actual capabilities.

'Self-driving' in spotlight again as China sees first Tesla autopilot crash | Reuters

Reuters was first to report last week that Tesla said it downloaded data from the Beijing car and confirmed it was in autopilot mode at the time of the crash, although the driver was not detected to have his hands on the wheel.

The flashing border signifies the driver needs to put his hands on the wheel. This is, as I recall, the second visual warning.
Fairly effective as it does a very good job drawing attention.

How many times I gotta tell ya. The left side is the right side and the right side is the wrong side!
