    Mr. El Dobro,
The link I couldn't get working was attached to post #337. All the other links are apparently working.

I'm sorry, I don't know what's on it; it's attached to post #337. I was able to view some of the videos, regarding the Tesla crash in China.

I clicked on both of them: #327 and #337, and they both say "video not found".

In the section of the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway the guy's driving on, it's really not that great an idea to use Autopilot.

If you didn't notice, the left side exit ramp for the Indiana Toll Road is right where the car veered.

There are also left side slip ramps before you get to that point, where people get on the highway rather abruptly.

To me, it looks like the system was confused by the barrier dividing the shoulder of the exit ramp from the shoulder of the highway, and didn't know where the correct lane was.

Although, I suppose it’s unlikely this driver would have let the accident occur if s/he weren’t lulled into a false sense of security that the car was driving itself safely. Or at least I suppose they could argue it that way in court.

Then again, it wouldn’t have mattered if they were using AutoPilot correctly. That is, either way, the driver should have stayed alert and engaged.

That’s a tough thing to do, though: People hear talk of self-driving cars and, with their very own eyes, seem to be seeing that happening. Meanwhile, when we don’t have to actively, continuously drive the car in every detail, our minds feel obligated to think about ... work, family activities, kids fighting in the back seat, what we need to do that evening, what’s on the radio at the moment, etc.

Does this mean that driving a car must remain “hard work,” lest our minds “zone out,” and seek enough additional distraction to make our lives sufficiently complicated again?

i suspect they will never be viable until they are perfected and humans are no longer allowed to drive. until then, it's all just 'testing' and there will be constant arguments about viability.
as far as systems like tesla, to me that's a whole different argument.

There was no veering. The car very smoothly followed the left lane line that lead directly to the median. If the landline on the right side of the median had not been worn off to the point of non-existence, the car would have, correctly, followed that.

I agree completely it is a bad place for Autopilot. Especially since the driver had experience trouble at that exact spot before, I am surprised he had Autopilot active. I am shocked he was doing so without paying attention.

I agree with this statement, if we replace the word “viable” with “perfectly safe.” I believe that true self-driving-car systems are already considerably safer than human drivers. However, they may be only twice as safe as human drivers, although we want them to be 5-10 times safer than human drivers.

Also, I expect that *when used correctly* Tesla AutoPilot, Nissan ProPilot, and even Toyota’s comparatively-limited TSSP, are all considerably safer than a human driver alone.

Thanks I did see the videos, and it sure makes me feel like why the heck do I want to stress out worrying if this thing is going to work or not. I'd rather just count on my own abilities and deal with traffic and road conditions. When and if the technology ever becomes good enough to be completely trusted (ha, ha!), then will I use it, assuming I can afford it, the insurance, and the lawyers!! I've got nothing against enhancements/safety prompts like the ones on my Prime, but sorry, I'll pass on "full autonomy"!

It’s easy to forget it’s completely acceptable, if not preferable, to turn these systems on and then continue driving as if they weren’t even there. AutoPilot and you will both be moving the wheel, almost always in perfect agreement. Every once in a rare while you and AutoPilot will disagree. Typically that will mean that AutoPilot has used the eyes on the back of its head (semi-literally, and sides of its head) to see something that you don’t/can’t see. Or it will mean that you will understand something that AutoPilot misinterprets.

    I'm confused.

The crash in March happened on a highway near San Francisco. This video was taken on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago, which I've driven many times.

I haven't seen any news about the California driver reporting he'd driven that stretch of highway with Autopilot and had no problems before. I have read that Tesla stated there have been hundreds of thousands of instances in which their cars passed that point while on Autopilot with no issues.

I'd love to hear what my fellow Chicagoan has to say about his experience.

And arriving at a CORRECT decision in an instant will remain the challenge; I feel my blood pressure going stratospheric! I'm not getting into a 3 second life-or-death argument with a computer!!
