The video sites I've seen seem to be, as a category, about the worst offenders I know for sites being useless with Javascript off.

I've mostly resigned to having to take some risks to get some sites to work. (For example, the Toyota wiring diagram viewer is Javascript-heavy, but also really useful, so I'll go ahead and tell NoScript to allow it).

In the interest of safety, I do have some limits around videos. I won't watch them on just any random site. I watch enough youtube that if their js code is malicious, I'm already pwned. If I'm on some other site with a video that I can see is a youtube embed, I will follow it to the origin link on youtube and then allow the scripts from there, but not from the embedding site. There are some news sites I would probably read if they didn't take such pains to be unusable with JS off, but as it is, they're getting along fine without my readership.

Imperfect half measures and somewhat unsatisfying, I agree, but there's just too much any more that plain doesn't work without allowing some JS at least selectively. My credit union, for example. And it's not like there are enough hours in the day to try and search out less JS-dependent competitors to take my business to (though if it were easier, I'd consider it).

Mint is a fairly decent distro, but I wouldn't want to try to help you with the amount of info you've posted so far.
Why do updates trash (screw up) your install?
They shouldn't and if they do you should either not update as much or watch closer what is updating.
( it a big pain, but it better than the alternatives )

javascript typically doesn't effect video playback. The video protocol usually is what hangs playback or lack of a video codex,
more commonly know as a video decoder..

check to see if you have ffmpeg installed.... It's way scarier than - umm what is it again ? ah hell you know that GUI player that works in Windows too....

ffmpeg is all cli ( command line interface ) but all you do is
    Code:
    cd
to the directory the video is in
    than type
    Code:
     ffplay the_video_i_want_you_to_play.mp4
or whatever the protocol is after the dot .mp4 .mpg .wmv .ogv .mkv or the flash one that no one knows because it's proprietary .fl(something) etc.
and your video plays 99.9999 % of the time if you have a solid installation of Mint.
( but you can't make ffmpeg do anything by clicking the mouse )

If you can't see video from youtube in firefox with Mint there is a problem.
( probably package(s) missing on your computer....

that brings up the next thing.. You say "new computer" . what kind and how new...
( it makes a big difference, if it too new even windows will have a hard time with the newness of the hardware until the computer components get some love from the mothership in redmond )

all that stuff could be much better explained on the mint forum
if you can weed through the suggestions made there currently.

Thanks for your reply, I identify with your summary of putting up with JS - it definitely used to be easier. Ever since keepvid.com started requiring JS in order to work I've been off and on with video-viewing capability - I'll have to read up on NoScript, to begin with.

I had been using a somewhat damaged computer for several months with no probs, but that became somewhat hit-n-miss, so had to eliminate that as a suspect. Right now, I can't even watch vids on the utube site with JS enabled, whereas I could a couple days ago, so this may be some other problem, possibly some kind of malware. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on malware, I mean javascript 8^).

A couple times it was the site I was using who updated and broke my video capability, a couple times an addon changed my preferences to automatically update, and right now I think I might have a malware problem cause this puter isn't working like it did a couple days ago...anyway, I usually check after installing something to see that nothing has 'automatically' been changed in the preferences but sometimes have brainfade or something and don't.

One thing I noticed that seems odd (to me) is I could call up a youtube page while JS is on, then turn JS off, and I'd still be able to watch any videos for as long as I wanted, could do searches in the utube search-box and play any that that would bring up, etc.; Can't do that today though, looks like something has borked my puter.

nah, I never use that one either, nor do I let any of my Windows 'puters on the internet. I just got ffmpeg installed, now I'll read up on it for a bit and see what can happen.

    Thanks, good stuff...

Or JS managed to crap-up my puter while I was watching videos 8^(

Actually it's just new to me, it's about 10 years old, a bottom-feeding offering from HP with minimal bios functionality. The board is by Asus and it has an Athlon 64 X2 4200 (one of the early dual-core offerings from AMD) with 3 gigs of ram.

I'll check over there and see what I can find. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this vv

Just to update on the T/A, its's starting to get weird.

The t/a has been sitting outside waiting for a warm weather forecast, well-covered by a piece of pond-liner rubber membrane. I ended up getting an insulation tester once i decided I didn't want to be totally blind looking into this problem.

Previously, when measuring with my Fluke 117 between any phase conductor and ground on either MG1 or MG2, the results would be over 40 Mohms ( the 117 can measure up to 40 Meg ohms), but now MG1 shows around 280 to 300K ohms - WTH?! And MG2 shows over 40M ohms on the Fluke and around 20-25M ohms from phase to ground with the Insulation tester (I keep wanting to call it a megger, but it's definitely not a Megger, it only cost 50 bucks).

I found what looks like an old leak of the pink stuff on the ICE side of the t/a, a pinkish deposit that I immediately rubbed off before I took a picture of it - duh!, anyway, there was some pink stuff there, really there was...

This really blows my mind, as it was basically sitting in the same configuration in the back of my truck 2 weeks ago when I checked with my fluke and all motor leads read over 40 M ohms to ground. I tried tugging on the wiring harness that goes to the resolver and temp sensor and saw no change in the readings - have to go think about this awhile.....

Good idea, but no cigar, had similar results with a similar DVM by Cen-tech. I'm starting to lean toward there being a coolant leak internally - will try shifting the thing around on the hoist while doing the measurements if it drys up a little
later today. I guess my salvage vehicle will be sitting right where it is for a while...

Final followup - rather disappointed to find that the problem resides in mg1, particularly because the dtc's were pointing
    to mg2 with the subcodes.

here's a pic of the shorted winding and a couple of the melted insulators in mg1; also one showing the rust deposits on the three stator attachment bolts, I don't think it should be rusting there but don't really know. mg2 looks pristine, at least in comparison, and the megohmeter says it's windings are at least 20 megohms to ground.

Aside from the poor picture quality, take my word for it, there's a bunch of powdered rust on the threads of the three bolts holding the stator and the threads in the case where they mount. there is no fipg used at that mounting point.

How embarassing, replying to myself to admit that I was wrong - on closer inspection, the orange looking powder more resembles little orange plastic particles, so now I guess it's another variety of thread-locker.

So, did you finally fix the problem, or totalled the car?

No luck repairing the transaxle, mg1's stator winding is burnt.

However, since mg2's resistance was kind of low (around 20Mohms) I baked it an hour or so at 250 F, then (hopefully)
sealed it with some special varnish. Now insulation resistance measures a bit over 40Mohms, just need a transaxle
    to put it in.

I thought you were going to have it rewound?

20 meg ohm is not low that’s wide open in your application.

No, not rewound, I was just considering taking to a motor rewind shop for a bake to dry out the insulation, rather than use the kitchen oven, but the guy wanted 250 bucks just for that!

I think down to 10 Mohms is acceptable to Toyota for proper operation, but 40 Megohms is closer to what they start out at new.

Not sure what your trying to do with varnish that Will be quite a mess when it sees the heat that coil field sees.

What are you trying to accomplish?

No mess, just adding one more layer of insulating enamel to the winding.

To seal the stator winding it against moisture ingress.

I don't know, was it coming from you?

J/K, I know what you mean, I think it started suffering from moisture ingress after the original owner took a hard hit to the transaxle by road debris.
