And that brings the second most common issue to bare, the receiving lens is dirty! However, it's not the outside that's filthy, it's the inside of that little red lens that's filthy! I have cleaned units that were dusty, and coated with a milky haze that's a result of the plastics & conformal coatings that under heat give off gases. When they hit the backside of the lens, they condense and cloud the lens just like on a new car windshield on a hot day! The fix is you have to take the TV apart, something I am perfectly comfortable doing, others, not so much!!!

Your call, but it usually fixes the problem if last posts remedy does not!!

Oh, thank you for reminding me that AFL exists.

Over the last week, I'd forgotten that there was any other sport - indeed any other thing at all - in Australia apart from the bloody cricket. Honestly, I am sick to the back teeth of it. I'm listening to British radio now because there is nothing on Australian radio other than the repercussions of Australian cricketers rubbing their balls.

I put an embargo on NRL a few years ago when they started despicable conduct - hear the word on the news, change station. This week, same thing with Cricket!!

I had a laugh this morning - Smith thinks he's got a sympathetic ear by crying on TV - so Warner joined him with the same antic.

Come Wednesday, anything to do with the Crazy Games will have a similar reaction with my remote controls. I'm sick of them before they start - the crazies have REDUCED our Motorway speed limits about 4 weeks ago - so that more traffic can flow. What makes these people think - obviously not brains. I'm 60-89km from the Calamity Games, and my traffic has ground to close to a halt.

Yes, that's possible - my CD/Radio/Cassette was only working at about 1 metre distance, but the signal looked good using a Smart Phone. The outer lens was clean as a whistle (polished it with a tissue to be sure) and took the casing off - there was quite a dust buildup on it, and the back of the lens. Cleaned it, and it was working fine again.

But with my TV/DVD remotes, it's always been the remote, either battery contacts, or the membrane contacts inside.

You should try living in Sydney. Channel 9 News usually starts with an NRL player getting arrested for fighting, domestic abuse, bubbling*, bestiality or drugs (all genuine stories over the last couple of years, even the bubbling*), then has five minutes of actual news, then has a ten-minute slot on NRL, then five minutes of actual news, and then it's the sports news, which is all NRL. (For the Americans, NRL is Rugby League (a bit like rugby, but more boring), which is the main sport in the outer suburbs of Sydney (Australia), Southern Lancashire and West Yorkshire (UK) and absolutely nowhere else, but Sydney people seem to think it matters.)

The Sydney Morning Herald said this was the "darkest day in the history of sport". We'll ignore all the times people died, then. (For the Americans - AN AUSTRALIAN PLAYER PLAYING AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA SCRAPED THE CRICKET BALL WITH A BIT OF TAPE WITH SAND ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TO MAKE IT A BIT ROUGHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE WORST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED, ANYWHERE, ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the only thing that has been on the news here since it happened a week ago.)

You have my sympathy. (For the Americans - we're discussing the Commonwealth Games, which are about to start near Alan's house.)

But remember, it is enormously important for these people to be not the best in the world at running or jumping or lawn bowls (!) or anything, but to be the best in the world out of people who live in countries that still have some sort of loyalty to one specific 91-year-old lady. Because that is a distinction worth having.

I'm very pleased that I'll be on holiday (admittedly spending some of the time in another Commonwealth country (or two Commonwealth Countries if you're classing teams as countries)) for most of the games. I loved the Winter Olympics, but I really do not care about this.

When I lived in Hong Kong, I had a Saab 9000. One day, on the way home from the airport, it burst into flames. I couldn't put it out, and the fire brigade had to come and extinguish it. I caused a huge traffic jam on a major road, and was very embarrassed.

I asked the fire brigade chief what he thought the problem was. I was expecting him to say an electrical fault or a fuel leak or something fairly general like that.

"I think the problem here," he said. "Is that it's an old Saab."

    He left it at that.

Two choices: Put up with the pain and aggravation or replace it.

The quality likely has improved a lot in the last 10 years and you might be impressed with the picture on a new one.

Also, the prices have come down A LOT recently and you might be surprised at how little you actually need to spend.......especially if the size is 40 inches or less.

(Now to look at the rest of the replies.)

Reading the other answers, this thought occurred to me:

The older your set is, the more likely it is that it can be affected by IR interference from other sources.......maybe even very bright sunlight.
Some "first generation" spiral compact florescent bulbs were really bad about that.

Try turning off ALL other electrical devices and lights in the room when you are having the failure.

Still intermittent outages of the remotes.

It seems the remotes work, the TV sensor is probably the problem from what I can gather from the remote control guru in Portland as well as comments on this site.

Funny, I am old enough to remember NOT having remotes and actually having to get up and change channels manually....sure cut down on channel surfing from the easy chair.

Indeed, when I got my first TV with a remote (a 1980s-era Magnavox), I remember I refused to use the remote for about two years -- then I caught the flu and couldn't hardly move from the sofa for a few days. That's when I became addicted.

I will live with it for now -- I have a bunch of other expenses taxing my budget at the moment and a TV is not all that important to me anyway. We only have OTA, so it's not like I am missing a bunch of channels.

    TMI.

Does Aldi sell TVs in America? They're selling 65" UHD ones here for A$699 - about US$540. 48" ones are around US$400. The screen is great, but the sound is a bit iffy - they need a soundbar to be any good. Smart TV functionality is OK, but a little clunky.

And a good second-hand smart TV costs next to nothing.

A smart TV would give you access to loads of online content, much of it either free or very cheap - I think we pay about US$5 a month for Netflix, for example, and YouTube is of course free. All that's dependent on your Internet access speeds, of course.

Something like an Apple TV does the same function as a Smart TV? That's our "in". Just finished off The OA, worth a watch. (y)

All flat screen TVs will suffer in the sound department as long as the speakers are in the rear.

Yes, and some DVD players will also supply internet access.

The sound on our LG isn't bad. It's still better with a soundbar, though.

You can get cheap android set-top boxes for about US$30 that can run Netflix and most TV stations' on-demand services.

funny, i bought a 43" vizio with sound bar to improve the sound, but found it didn't make any difference. maybe if you are watching movies or something?

hearing loss doesn't help i suppose.

I've got an LG TV and am happy with the sound (*1*).

My Panasonic DVD/HDD/PVR gadget will connect to the internet somehow.

I did connect briefly to watch a YouTube on the big screen a while back, and, as with YouTube, it comes up with other suggestions. A few hours later I was still wasting time - and disconnected it - but was horrified by how much of my limited BroadBand it chewed up. Not sure how TV via internet chews up internet - I haven't tried it?

(*1*) - I'm reading a book about ageing at the moment - more to do with end of life stuff. BUT - he talks about how the body deteriorates over life - many bits starting after adolescence. The hearing, he says "... diminishing ability to hear high-frequency sounds ... don't invest in expensive sound systems as you age; you won't be able to tell the difference." So, maybe my being happy with the sound of my LG TV is related to the age of my ears.

IIRC< I priced a comparable TV a couple of weeks ago when this whole thing started and it was around $180. 32" LCD.

I don't care about smart capability or wifi or netflicks, etc., since I have extremely slow DSL service and have issues with some YouTube vids.

The set does have a built-in DVD player, which is nice, but guess I could live without it.

Again, IIRC, correctly, WalMart(?) had a couple of decently rated/reviewed Scepture(?) brand comparables on clearance for around $90, but first strike is WalMart and then the brand, which I have never heard of....
