Should cars nag you about rear seat passengers buckling up?

I think that a vehicle owner should be able to disable ALL of the safety features in a car.

Forcing their use interferes with natural selection.

Only if the people who respond in the ambulance are allowed to leave non-helmeted and unbuckled people at the accident scene.......

I have no problem with dot.gov inspired safety gear.
I just want to explore the outer limits of how much government intrusion we should have to put up with, and help foster a polite conversation about those limits......
If one presumes that health care is a fundamental human right that should be provided by dot.gov, then it's probably more cost effective IN THE SHORT RUN to try to thwart Darwin.

Un-belted back seat crash survivors will probably have a statistically interesting rate of spinal cord injuries that have to be dealt with, and those can be quite spendy.

I was belted and fractured L12 & T1. Nothing serious. My Gen 2 took the hit for me. It was totaled, I walked out through the the windshield, out of the hospital, and just wore a turtle shell back brace for 4 months. I got off easy, compared to the car. But it was spendy all the same even with decent insurance.

Observing the consumer/auto industry interaction from a whole, and from a distance, I'm often somewhat surprised how offended people become in regards to the "intrusion" of seat belt lights or warning buzzers.

I mean, there seems to be a never ending tide of posts, usually from new owners of Prius, bemoaning the genetic necessity of trying to quiet the back-up warning beep.

Now we are debating whether a vehicle should illuminate a dashboard symbol or sound a buzzer or both to remind us to have back-seat passengers buckle up.

To me? No warning light or buzzer has ever really bothered me to the point I wanted it disabled or felt it was overly intrusive. Since having your passengers belted up, is IMO a good idea, it's hard for me to be against the application.

Also since I think a disproportionate amount of time, with back-seat passengers you may be dealing with children and younger passengers, I think a reminder is a good thing.

Of course as a child myself I remember piling into the back-seat of a 1967 Mustang with my brother, not even sure we had seat belts. In the summer the vinyl seats became so sticky, it would of taken a pretty hard blow to peel my brother or myself from the seats. I'm exaggerating here -but those seats were actually pretty horrible.

But I also remember piling into the back of other vehicles and my Father or Mother exclaiming "Everybody Buckled Up?".

They cared about our safety, and I didn't take it as nagging. So a light or buzzer today?....
Well...is everyone buckled up? I'm OK with it.

What does not make sens are the 3 rear seat belt lights on the 2017 & newer Prius. The 3 lights go on if there is nobody on that rear seat position or if somebody is there but not buckled. If they are buckled, that particular light does not illuminate.

Why di they need to light when nobody is in the rear seats?

The prime acts the same way?
Apparently the 2016 Prius does not have the rear seatbelt warnings AFAIK. @pilotgrrl can correct me if I am mistaken (again) ;)

If the prime does have the rear seat warning light/bells, I haven't seen or hear them yet. I'll still trying to figger out if the plus gets the dynamic grille block and the pedestrian noise maker. I haven't heard that thing either.
Apparently neither did a deer sleeping in the middle of the road one Friday night in March.
But I could have been going to fast at 30 mph for the noise maker to sound the warning "Prius Approching"

All Gen 4 have them and the noise maker is on all and will son be required unless that law gets "rolled back" too.

I routinly buckle the belt around anything I set on a seat to keep it from gomering (going to ground) usually groceries, or dog food bags, or the white LL Bean bags filled with whatever, I also drive the speed limit, common sense.

You're right, the 2016 doesn't have the rear seatbelt warnings.

Do the lights go out if the seat is empty but the seat belt buckled?

I just checked with one position and if the seat belt is buckled with no passenger, the appropriate light does not illuminate.

UK car, I know, but my three rear seat belt warning lights come on if there's nobody in the rear and I drive off, but they self-extinguish after a short while even when the rear belts are not fastened. No audible warning for the rear AFAIK.

No audible warning here either. It is curious the US 2016 Prius did not have those lights. Perhaps added to US 2017 to standardize parts & processes.

Ridiculous over-regulation! I believe in Personal Responsibility, yet my friend continually mocks me as a Liberal!! If this is Nature's Way of thinning the herd, then so be it. Of course I believe that airbags should be banned, and mandatory three-point seat belts should be put in place. I totally resent the extremist insurance companies lobbying successfully to mandate airbags in every corner of my car.
These proven deadly devices have improperly and unexpectedly exploded killing people. And then of course they create exponential repair costs for our over-"protected" cars!! On topic, no need for any of the silly reminders for belts, lane wandering, cruise control doing something!! You want a warning, tell me with a Klaxon and flashing lights when my tire pressures are falling; now THAT'S a USEFUL warning!!
Just occurred to me; I think it's a good idea to belt, if possible, objects placed on seats in a car; unsecured items become projectiles during rapid speed/directional changes!

It makes no sense to me why your rear seat belt lights would be on when there isn't anyone sitting back there.
It also makes no sense to me why our noise maker, grille block, front and rear proximity safety brakes don't work.
    ( unless I don't get that stuff on a plus ) ???
I put in my call to the dealer about the grille block and while I've been waiting for them to get back to me concerning the possible
cost I might be looking at to have it diagnosed, my imagination is running wilder on a daily basis. !

To answer the thread title... No.

Instead, an annoying vibration or shock should be be transmitted to the the passengers in the rear seats.
