The Prius' 6 years is quite long. Industry standard for non-luxury vehicles is 5 years. Luxury vehicles tend to be 10 years or more, although every once in a while, you'll see a 5-year cycle (.e.g 2000-2005 Mercedes S-Class). The LS is going on 13 years before the 2019 LS arrives.

i just think if they don't come out with a larger vehicle, larger batteries as tech changes, and wait until there's a 400 mile battery, they will miss the boat.
but gm isn't saying this, just some predictive company.

If GM is planning other plug in models, letting the Bolt, which is mostly LG Chem guts, generation go that long make sense. Investing in a SUV BEV might be a better move, and the Bolt could get upgraded batteries without a generation change. That has happened to the Leaf, Fusion Energi, i3, iMiEV, Spark EV, and Volt.

That misconception is an interesting one. It reveals much about the understanding/recognition of how generation is actually defined. What criteria do you use?

Gen-0 (many programming languages start counts at 0, not 1) was the first 3 years. The following 3 were what we know as Gen-1, to account for the 6 people assume was all the same.

That unknown past comes from only being available in Japan. It was a major update very few here knew about... the bumpers were gray, the screen wasn't touch, the engine had less power... but most significant was the battery upgrade, from "D" packaging to prismatic cells.

The big change between gen1 and 1.5 was some retuning of the ICE and switching to Prismatic cells. There could be some minor midcycle changes to styling, but most people looking at them would same they are the same generation.

Tweaking the drivetrain, or even offering whole engines or transmissions, is not outside the realm of changes a car model could experience without becoming a new generation. If such were the case, the 2019 Prius is going to be the Gen5 then.

In the 2019 thread, it is mentioned that the current port injection is being switched to their DS4, the hybrid hybrid port and direct injection. There is speculation of the Prius getting the new 2L hybrid engine.

Nine years might be OK for a conventional car in some markets.
But it is outright silly to think this in the EV market with (relatively) rapid advances in battery technology as well as other technological advances in safety/ADAS and in a competitive market that is expected to grow from a relatively small base.
If Tesla does only half of what they say they will do, by 2025 GM will be history unless they have several other EVs to sell before then.

Upgraded battery and improved safety systems can be added to a car without a generation change. The Volt and Spark EV received a battery upgrade within a generation. Many are starting to follow Toyota in making advanced safety tech standard without a generation change.

Cars are not electronics. Generation changes are denoted by major changes to the model's platform. Yes, engine and drive train upgrades are often also involves, but those have happen between generation changes for a car.

When I think of a generation change the key word has always been "platforn". A car built from a clean sheat of paper even though they do use some parts from a previous generation. All new framework and sheet metal.

Didn't the current Ford Fusion come out for model year 2011? It hasn't changed since.

Sounds about right. I remember it had ACC and it came after our 2010 Prius came out. (so we only had one year where we were the only vehicle in its class with radar cruise).

Yeah, that's definitely getting long in the tooth. Ford hasn't had much success with sedans lately (Five Hundred/Taurus, Fusion, Focus sedan). The Focus hatch seems to sell better. And the Fusion was pretty good back then but the age is starting to show. It's still classy imo, esp. with the 2018 updates. The Mazda6 still wins the beauty contest for me and that one has been around for a while too.

The Fusion Energi is getting a range boost with a 9kWh pack. I guess for the 2019 model.

Resources are finite. Ford might be more focused on their RWD hybrid system for the F150 and Mustang. Plus the other hybrids and plug in models they have coming.

The Gen 1 Volt had two battery upgrades in it's lifetime.
