I believe my 2005 Prius main traction battery is dying. It had previously done something similar 4+ years ago and I replaced it with a remanufactured battery but this time I'm going to just get the OEM battery. I replaced the battery myself 4+ years ago. Is there a guide to replacing it with an OEM battery. I've read that you have to swap over electronic parts from the old battery to the new OEM battery. Is that all that is needed.
Any suggestions on the best place to get one? I live in the Washington DC area.
Also my current battery is remanufactured is whoever I get the OEM battery going to reject it as a suitable core?

    Thanks

Your first challenge might be to find a dealer that would sell you a battery without installation. Some people have successfully used remanufactured batteries as cores but it depends on the dealer.
Your best bet might be @2k1Toaster ’s kit of new cells. I think the price is still $1600 shipped and you keep your old modules. His link is in my signature.
He is a trusted member here who works with rechargeable batteries every day. His warranty is 2 years Toyota OEM is one year if you do the installation.

I replaced my hybrid battery with a new Toyota battery bought at a local dealer. I got a great deal and I did a note about it here about a year and a half ago.

It is not very difficult but you do have to swap some parts. If you can do it on a work bench or table it will be easy. I did it outside on the ground. Just take your time. I didn’t have a helper which would make it a lot easier.

There is a thread here somewhere about the cheapest dealers to buy a battery. I found one not real far away and ask the local dealer parts manager to price match them. He did and even gave me a little more of a discount when I picked it up.

I did have to leave a large core deposit which was returned to me when I took my old battery back to them.

I don’t know about them taking a non OEM battery back. You need to ask the dealer. Try to talk to the parts manager.

    Good luck,

You might try Miller Toyota in Manassas VA. I have had good experiences with their sales people, especially Sam Lee.
They are too far away from me (150 miles) to have service experiences though.

So, Glen, are you still happy with your traction battery alternative cells? Are they holding their own? How many miles and mileage and all that. Thanks for your posts.

Just as a follow up. I ended up going with a remanufactured battery from GreenBeanBattery Hybrid Battery Replacement Virginia | Green Bean Battery Co.

I'm quite happy with it so far. It has a lifetime warranty and was replaced summer of 2018 and is still going strong. They will come to your house to swap out the battery. I would definitely recommend.
