I just bought a 1 owner 07 prius with 134k miles on it. It came with all kinds of service records (shoved in the glovebox nonetheless) so that is a plus. However it has a few issues. For one it had an oil leak on the ICE and that was supposed to be repaired by the dealer but we don't think it was done in time as there is what sounds like rod knock (more on that later).

The main thing I am concerned about right now is the VSC/ABS/Brake/(!) lights are on as soon as you turn the car to IG-ON. It seems to drive fine for what little I have driven it though. I have tested the 12v battery and it is borderline so I'll probably replace it. I did the test as described here: https://priuschat.com/forums/newbie-forum/73400-weird-stuff-happening-mpgs-dropping-test-battery.html and it was within 0.1v on the low side until I turned the car to READY and then it was at 14.3v. I have also checked the inverter coolant pump and it seems to be doing its job. I can feel it operating and I see minimal turbulence in the fluid tank.

Where should I go next to troubleshoot this issue? Should I do the jumper trick and see what is wrong? My brother works for a dealership (honda but used to be at toyota) and he said he would bring his scanner by and see what is wrong but I'm not 100% sure if his high dollar scanner has the right stuff for the hybrid or not.

After I can get to the bottom of this I will tackle the engine knock issue. It sounds almost like a diesel idling. I do not think it is a misfire due to the coils because I do not have a check engine light on. So I will probably end up replacing the engine with a good one.

    congrats and welcome!

sounds like you have a project car. as such, i recommend getting tech stream code reading software, and a subscription to the online service manual. you can use the blink codes (jumper trick) if you're so inclined.
but get the 12v up to snuff before attempting anything else.

    all the best!(y)

Sounds like his should be able to read they hybrid specific codes with his reader. Also, if he works in the shop end of the dealership, he should be able to diagnose a rod knock sound easily.

    I'll look into that.

Yeah he is the lead tech at one of the local dealerships. I'm sure his scanner (can't remember if it is snapon or cornwell) would be able to do it. My issue is getting him to actually do it. He spouts profanities every time I mention hybrid. He nearly disowned me when I put a prius engine in my 85 MR2. :D

It sounds like I could use the techstream anyways since I own all Toyota/Lexus vehicles and my cheap bluetooth odb2 scanner w/ Torque pro is limited in what it can do. I found a good seller with good ratings on amazon for the v13 and windows 10 compatibility for less than $60. I think it is worth that.

Thanks for the input thus far everyone. I was able to get all the lights off that were on the dash with the exception of the airbag light. The BRAKE (!) VSC ABS went off once I drove around the block as I figure that was on due to the guy I got the car from used a tow dolly and left the "key on" all the way from Memphis (about 3 hours away). The 12v battery was almost dead when I got it also. An overnight trickle charge helped that and the aforementioned drive around the block fixed the majority of the lights. The tire light was due to some low tires.

I did get the amazon techstream deal but I cannot connect to the SRS airbag ecu. I'll do another thread on that though. Now I get to figure out why the pass side airbag light stays on. Is that normal?
