    Hello All,
My original 12V battery has passed on. I went with an alternative battery an 8A22NF battery. It was sourced locally and cost $123.05.

I picked up the larger battery clamp assembly 74440-47020 for $17.81 to replace the NON-SKS battery clamp assembly.

    Here's the spec sheet:
    http://www.mkbattery.com/images/8A22NF-DEKA.pdf

    Length 9.38
    Width 5.50
    Height 9.25
    Weight 38.5
    Shipping Weight (lb.) 40
    DC Output Voltage 12
    Operating Temperature -40 ° to 140 °F
    BCI Group 22NF
    CA (@32°F) 490
    Reserve Minutes 25A 90
    Amp/Hr 55
    C.C.A. 280
    20 Hr. Rate Amp/Hr 55
Charging Voltage Standby Use 13.5–13.8 V
    Resistance, milliohms 3
Cycle Service Charging Voltage 14.4–14.6 V
    Capacity at C/100 63
    Capacity at C/20 55

I used the stock battery connectors with slight modifications. The negative cable I drilled the screw hole to accept a larger bolt, and bolted it to the negative terminal. The positive cable I used the stock connector had to open it a bit more and used a threaded bolt to clamp it down. It took a little modification to fit the positive terminal. It's turned a bit and required that I cut the bottom of the carpet cover, there are two post that go down and it required cutting one of them. The cover sits flush.

The battery large clamp works fine but there's about 1/2 inch gap the bolt works fine and the battery is secure.

The vent for the traction battery took a little fanangling but it fitted.
There is no vent on this battery.
NO SPECIAL HANDLING REQUIREMENTS ~ NON-SPILLABLE by DOT (Department of Transportation), ICAO (International Commercial Airline Organization) and IATA (International Airline Transportation Association) definitions.

Overall I'm happy with the install. Sure beats the dealer price for a replacement. $180 for the battery and $180 for installation.

    The optima locally is $200.

The battery is warranted for 2 years. 1 year full replacement 2nd prorated, but don't think that will be an issue.

It does not appear to be externally vented, as would be safe, nor does it appear to have JIS posts as would be secure.

Hey Jimbo, how does having it bolted through post and clamped to the positive post not make it secure? I agree it's NOT a JIS post, but it's still a friction fitting and using the both through the connector makes it a mechanical fitting.

Externally vented... Why does it need to be externally vented when it meets: DOT/ICAO and IATA requirements meaning that it is NON-SPILLABLE - excepted from the following Hazardous Material (dangerous goods) Regulations. SPECIAL HANDLING REQUIREMENTS ~ NON-SPILLABLE by DOT (Department of Transportation), ICAO (International Commercial Airline Organization) and IATA (International Airline Transportation Association) definitions.

The drain tube is a moot point if it is non-spillable. If your concerned about the possibility of hydrogen gas the bottom of the traction battery vent is partially open and it goes to the vent.

    The point is moot really.

I'm just pointing out what is working for me.

So long as you do not carry other humans, I am good with your solution as well.

When charging systems go wrong, two events can happen, Sulfuric acid vapor or Hydrogen gas may be generated, either can escape. Sadly, in the Prius 'escape' means it is in the passenger compartment with, well, passengers. That is why a Prius Battery needs to be externally vented, to get those gases and vapors outside the car.

How is it similar to the Prius? Size/battery/storage/fitment? Your example is moot.

Congratulations. Continue saving 60 bucks every 5 years....................
and people have tried pointing info out to you about the dangers. They are merely trying to help. They can't force you to comprehend. Do as you wish with your own life. We all do sketchy stuff at some point in our life, but please don't try convince others to do the same.

Here's a tidbit......all AGM batteries are considered spill proof....as are gel batteries...that doesn't mean they won't emit toxic gas when something goes wrong (as noted in the earlier link with the dead people). That car was supposed to have an externally vented AGM also. The battery is mounted under the drivers seat IIRC. It was replaced by a non-externally vented model to save a few bucks.

Not much of a savings vs direct fit, drop in replacement by Bosch and AC Delco.
    $151.99 - $123.05 = $28.94
    $148.65 - $123.05 = $25.60
    Alter positive and negative clamp.
    NO external vent.
