Has anybody used automatic high beam successfully? I just discovered my Prius v 2018 has automatic high beam. I don't feel like I can rely on it though as it dims the high beam too late for an oncoming car. Not sure whether there is anything I can do to improve it, apart from not using the automatic function. ?

Are oncoming drivers flashing their high beams to express their irritation?

There is a slight delay in dimming by the AHB in our Sienna when it encounters oncoming vehicles but that apparently hasn't been enough of a problem to cause other drivers to flash their high beams.

That doesn't mean AHB is working well on your Prius v. Toyota has implemented the same features on many models but there has been quite a bit of variation in how well the features work. A good example is PCS on the original Prius v. The IIHS found it to be nearly worthless on the Prius v but found that it worked well on other Toyota models.

I suggest consulting with your Toyota dealer if other drivers are expressing their displeasure.

What is the load in your car and were is the weight located?

Seems to work OK in my '17 C.

But that is just another example of stupid engineering on Toyota's part.

I would MUCH prefer having automatic headlights that come on at dusk and off at dawn; something actually useful (which the C does NOT have).
Instead of the automatic high beams ........which a large percentage of owners might never use, or very seldom.

Nobody has flashed their lights yet but my headlights dim much later than I would. They dim very quickly when I come to a T-intersection, so they react well to objects, but not to.other headlights.
And to answer the question about the load - my Prius v is empty apart from a few bags, with thd seats folded down.

Then maybe your AHB is working well. The object of AHB is to keep the high beams on as much as possible which the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS.org) has found to dramatically enhance safety. I too would tend to manually dim headlights sooner than AHB does but that maybe proves that AHB is making better decisions than I would.

The 2015-up U.S. Prius v with AHB and bi-LED headlights was the first vehicle to earn the IIHS highest headlight rating which very few vehicles get. Many more expensive European vehicles (e.g. Mercedes and BMW) get far lower headlight ratings from the IIHS.

Traditional high beam headlights will likely disappear in coming years. Adaptive headlights that use beam masking are already in use in Europe and may soon be allowed in Canada. Adaptive headlights are essentially on high beam all the time and use masking and selective pixel lighting to keep from blinding oncoming drivers and pedestrians. LED headlights may be a "flash in the pan" as some manufacturers are already using laser headlights on production vehicles.

    SIGH.
Light Emitting Diode is a generic term.
A laser is one type of light emitting diode.

Yes, both lasers and LED's have diodes as the light source but are otherwise very. very different.

    That is bovine excrement.

While there is some overlap between LEDs and lasers, neither item is anywhere close to being a subset of the other. LED is not a generic term, it has a very specific meaning. Most lasers types are not LEDs.

Laser emissions are monochromatic, coherent, and collimated. Most LEDs are none of those. Non-white LEDs are mostly narrow-band, but that is not the same as monochromatic.

    I stand corrected......partly.

MOST low power laser are indeed LEDs, made with special "doping" to get the characteristics you need.

High power lasers are quite a different matter, however.
But I don't think that any part of this discussion is about a laser that will cut through steel plating.

That is ONLY because a few consumer product types containing them have now been built by the billions. If one makes a comprehensive list of all the types of lasers and products they are used in, LED lasers would be a fairly small portion of that list.

The discussion was about car headlights.
Do you REALLY think that cars will have headlights with sodium lasers which require 3000 volts to activate (or similar) ?
Or that it is more likely that some car makers are just CALLING their high powered LEDs "lasers" as a marketing gimmick ??

Please provide independent technical/industry references that support your speculations. I'm a "science guy" with an engineering degree, albeit a light-weight one, who deals in facts and not in what member fuzzy1 humorously called "bovine excrement".

I was replying to the fictitious claims in posts #9 and #11, neither of which were about car headlights.

BTW, what happened to the original Sam Spade member, the one who no longer logs in? Did I miss a popcorn-worthy event?
