I went to my Toyota dealer today Clearwater Toyota and went to parts counter and got an up to date quote on the cost of the hybrid battery over the counter I install it. It was the same price Olathe quoted $1700 plus $1300 core.

I asked if I order today how long?

Parts guy checked and says they have 63 on back order with no eta on arrival.

There is currently a Nationwide backorder. Can be a week or two in some cases.
    Can be somewhat random.
If you place an order it will help secure your place in line.

I called Olathe (the dealership in Kansas) yesterday May12 and confirmed these things:
$1625 is still the price for DIY or installed. Installation at the dealer is NOT required.
There is now a 3-4 week wait for batteries.

I'm happy about the information that you and EdtheFox5 have posted and hope the price will continue to drop. My motivation is that I'm considering buying an older Prius that needs a new traction battery. I plan on visiting both Tampa and KC for baseball games this summer. I'll be able to bring a battery home, although shipping would still be ideal. I'll double check and get my name on the waiting list if I cannot find a comparable price closer to home.

    Thanks for the information.

No HV battery problems -- yet.

    Hoping that continues.

    My questions:

    1) Does it seem that MOST dealers will NOT install a new battery unless you buy it from them (I will call around in the next few days to see what Seattle area dealers say -- there are not that many dealers around here.

    2) Is this something you could possibly leave with an independent shop to do -- meaning I supply the Toyota battery and they install it? I already asked my regular independent mechanic and he said no.

Issue I have, I have no problem doing a swap out as you do with the Dorman aftermarket battery. That seems quick and easy and fool-proof -- mostly, but I really am reluctant to try anything such as needs to be done with swapping in the new Toyota battery.

Of course, Dorman not so good, so if I ever go do this path, I will be doing it with a new Toyota battery.

I have the same thought process that you have. I want an OEM battery but want to get it installed myself. The warranty would be 3 years for dealer installed, vs 1 year for non dealer installed.

It's a crazy time for OEM batteries right now. Prices and availability seem to change from state to state. With the demand going up due to the natural aging of Prii, I'm hoping the prices will drop further.

Price doesn’t seem to be the issue in my area. The line is 63 deep with no eta.

Let me point out... at least Musk isn’t involved, remember when he paypal’ed people into causing a class action suite against PayPal.

Now, if toyota is holding back batteries to sell new cars, well, let’s wait and see.

Class action suits have a reason.

Let me also point out... the resounding price is 1600$, so the fictitious 3000$ price will now go away, so much disinformation, so little time.

The price is not $1600 for most people.
It is very unusual for a dealer to sell the batery at that price.
It is much more likely that it will be above $2000.
$3000 would be very unusual, but again, dealer's can charge whatever they want.

    MelonPrius,
If you being the battery home don't forget there is a $1350 core fee. So at some point you will need to go back with your core so you get the core fee back.

I called the Olathe dealership (parts department) this morning. I confirmed with the employee on the phone (and his parts director) that the battery would not be sold to someone for DIY and they claim that they're strict on it. The price is $2,200 for a battery there with the mandatory install. kenoarto, if you have a name of a person you spoke to, can you pm me?

I called Clearwater Toyota and confirmed that the part has a backlog of 63, and you have to prepay for the part before your name is on the list. Southeast Toyota handles Florida/Ga/SC and dealers in those states will likely be out of stock. However, the cost quoted from Clearwater Toyota is $1,950, not $1,700. I tried to negotiate the price down, but I couldn't get the parts employee to budge off of $1,950. Edthefox5, can you pm me the name of the person that offered you $1,700?

Thanks for the reminder about the core, ericbecky. I'm still looking for that elusive $1,600 price and I'm willing to travel. I just need to verify the price over the phone.

If you do ongoing business with the dealer at some volume, that often helps decrease the price.
Prepaying for the part is not an unusual way to do business when you are a new (or 1-time) customer for a high dollar part.

Right now NEW OEM battery is unobtainium due to backorders, so that can keep higher prices maintained. No need to negotiate if demand is high.

Last week I installed every pack that was in stock in the surrounding 100 or so miles and I'm behind 2 right now.
Hopefully you won't need one any time soon.

    Good luck.

Don't know the name of the parts guy at the counter. But what does that matter?

May have given me a break as I bought the car there new. That doesn't really matter either as I doubt there going to ship it anyway. Olathe wont ship.

If you need one that bad I would go with 2k's system. Last I heard it was back ordered also not sure maybe a month or so. Maybe 2ktoaster will weigh in.

I was trying to get the $1,700 price that you said was offered to you from Clearwater Toyota. I couldn't. I thought maybe you had a connection, that's all.

Yes, I understand that I would have to be there in person. I don't need one bad, but will continue to look for an OEM battery that will cost around $1,600 and I'm willing to travel.

Edit: I see you have a 2nd gen and I have a 3rd gen. Could that be the difference?

Don't forget about paying the $1350 core fee.
The Toyota packs are only partially assembled. Not plug and play.

You must provide them an old core properly prepared and packaged. (Rubber mats in place, leads removed, end connectors wrapped bagged and taped, etc) As well as car details.

Plus you will want to be sure to remove all the parts you need from the old core and transfer them to the new pack before you turn in the old core.

Thx for the advice. I've been studying novakevin's thread about his diy install.

That was a pretty good write up but missed identifying some key things. Hopefully he didn't accidently miss some things and send it back with the core. That would suck. I'm guessing he was writing from memory and just forgot.

I assumed since you asked so many questions you have a g2. If all you have is a 2014 your battery should be in great shape. Why the interest in a battery?

What would I have missed (key things) based on my write up? Curious to know. I think I left out the bus bar covers- which new ones were provided with the new battery. I literally sent the core back along with the original HV cables because it came with new ones.

MenloPrius...While you seem to be hunting the lowest price, there are several other factors to consider. You could do the swap at whatever dealer you get the cheapest price, but what if you do the swap, turn the core in, and you have codes showing? I left everything out of the car (seats, etc) for two weeks while I drove it to see if everything was working normal.

The shipping box that it comes in will take up the entire back seat and trunk...so no passenger space if you are travelling to your beisbol games.

I highly doubt you can but a battery a thousand miles away or whatever and then turn the core into your local dealer and expect a core refund.

FWIW...my post wasn't about how to do an install right/wrong....it just provided my experience pricing the battery, replacing the battery, and the options available.
