    Using autozone obd2 reader, the machine indicated a P0700 and a P1898 error on my 2006 prius

    Does anyone have any idea as to what the error code means other than Transmission control module error.

    I do know that my mpg dropped from 46 to about 42 to 44 (if I really work at it) and I appear to be consuming
    oil but do not see any blue smoke. mileage is overl 200,000 motor seems smooth as does the transmission. engine light comes on sporadically and not for long..Maintenance required light is on all the time.

    Some of the blurbs I read suggested that the catalytic burner may not be operating correctly if oil is being consumed and that situation can give me a p-0700 code. but there are at least 5 other possibilities. I know most of you have extensive experience so I am asking for your insight to narrow the possibilities.

    is there a software package that I can purchase for near $150.00 that would give me the
    extensions for toyota so that I can see data that hones in on the problem?

    It can not afford tech stream....and $400 for autoenginuity is doable but difficult as I am 73, retired on social security and do not fix cars for a living other than my 2006 prius which i fix for me. ProScan web site is horrible to navigate and find out info. PCM Scan seems to be aimed at ford, gm and mazda.

    I may have an old old tech stream package that someone allowed me to download and provided a key long long ago on here....I have a usb adapter I have an old laptop running w10 (insider preview) and I have an iphone 7.

    all suggestions appreciated

    and this:

    could be connected as the engine light flickering means you're VERY low on oil; to the point of doing damage to the engine. This usually means the owner isn't keeping up with oil levels because the engine is burning a lot of oil and this can lead to catcon issues.

    Also, posting in the Prime forum won't get you as many looks as posting in the gen 2 forums.

    GOOD LUCK!

    Maintenance required light is on all the time.

    Although I don't have answers for you on the codes, the maintenance warning lamp on your model is only used as an indicator for when oil changes are due. At 4500 miles, it will blink. At 5000 miles, it will turn solid and stay lit. When the oil gets changed, reset the maint light and it's counter will start over. Plenty of videos online on how to reset. Takes about one minute.

    Also, an inexpensive option would be to get a used Android type phone (it doesn't need a sim card) and a bluetooth adapter for the OBD2 port. The wireless on the phone will still work, so download some free apps like Hybrid Assistant, Hybrid Reporter, or any of the dozens of others that can provide hybrid info.

    You may even be able to get a phone for free if you have any friends/relatives that like to upgrade a lot and keep their old phones.

    Thank you for being so helpful. You have no idea how nice it feels to not be judged but instead be fed information that could be useful. I thank you for your info and demeanor - bil

    I'm completely unfamiliar with the P0700 and was curious, so I did a bit of looking around. I found this during lunch today on my work computer search engine. Odd, because it doesn't come up on Google on my home computer.

    OBD/2 P0700 error code description and symptoms.

    Variable Cam Timing Over-advanced (Bank 1) The comprehensive component monitor (CCM) monitors the VCT position for an over-advanced camshaft timing.The test fails when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in an advanced position. Cam timing improperly set No oil flow to the VCT piston chamber Low oil pressure VCT solenoid valve stuck closed Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit) P0700 DTC is a check of the VCT unit.

    Common Causes of Toyota Prius P0700 OBD2 Code
    A common cause of code P0700 is the failure of P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction, but there are several other possible causes as well, such as ;
    • Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit)
    • Faulty oil control valve (OCV)
    • Faulty Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve
    • Faulty Air Flow Meter
    And just some P1898 info, of which I have no idea about it's accuracy(especially since it mentions cylinder 8):

    Common Causes of Toyota Prius P1898 OBD2 Code
    A common cause of code P1898 is the failure of Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit High, but there are several other possible causes as well, such as ;
    • Air fuel ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection
    • Faulty Air Flow Meter
    • Faulty Air fuel ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 1
    • Variable Camshaft Timing solenoid stuck open

    In a way, this would make sense and explain the drop in MPG. There are several threads on the forum about the variable timing mechanism and how to clean/replace the components. If I remember correctly, there's even a small filter in the system that can become clogged.

    I do not believe that either of those DTC are valid. Since you have access to Techstream, I suggest that you try to get it to work so that you can determine the actual DTC.
