Lost both my smart keys...how bad will the wallet hit be?

Dealer told me $250 a key. Add on fees and towing, that's 3 bills for you.

Call as many dealers as possible and several locksmith. You'll see prices vary a lot. I have done about 5 Prii with all keys lost in the San Francisco Bay area. Very easy to do!

 

I dont know prices but it seems many others on here do. But if it makes you feel better i have lost many keys. Although it may be expensive take repreive in the fact that many of us had to deal with this, and that you are much less likely to repeat this in the future. Im so sorry!!!!! :-( :-(

That’s not funny. It’s terrifying being a widow living by myself and something like this happening to me. I’ve been robbed in my house at gunpoint. I’ll NEVER feel safe again. And I will NOT get a gun as any guy is bigger and stronger than me at age 70. I’m 5’2” and 95# with cancer. Seriously. They’ll just take the gun from me. I wish that the NRA allowed the sale of “smart guns.” Guns that can only be fired if I’ve got the small wrist band on.

PLUS we also had >50 inches of rain in less than 24 hrs on Kauai and Oahu which swept away homes. Climate change is wreaking havoc on the island chain. Also the smallest homes--2 BR one bath 500 sq ft wood homes START at $900,000. and no we don’t get paid more...50% of the people work 2-3 FT jobs just to rent a rat’s nest.

The oldest islands in the chain is to the West. Kauai is oldest, all volcanoes long dead, so has massive amount of vegetation...then as you go east islands get younger so that the “Big Island of Hawai’i” is the youngest and STILL forming land mass by the eruption of magma through surface creating lava which falls over the cliffs forming new parts of the island. I lived next to Diamond Head on Oahu--old, old volcanic crater now dead. There are other old craters such as Punchbowl--because it looks like a “punchbowl.” It’s where the National Cemetery of the Pacific is and where my late spouse’ cremains are inurned. When I die soon, I will have a military funeral and have my cremated remains placed at Punchbowl. No land left for burials--unless you want to pay $25,000 for a burial plot.

Sorry to hear about your being a victim of a violent crime, but I don't see what my post has to do with that situation. Don't get the connection. OP was asking about cost of replacement. I was responding specifically to his question.

Since it was 5 years ago, I expect the OP has already dealt with the cost and reality.

Attach a small luggage tag to your new fobs, with say your phone number and an email.



If you have locking hub nuts, similar strategy with the lock nut socket is good, tape your info to the barrel.

Put a caribiner clip on the keychain. The one's mountain climbers use. The second you get out of the car clip the keychain to your pants belt loop. Your losing it because your putting it down. Haven't lost a key since.

I DIDN’T LOSE THE FOB. The service department lost one inside my car then took my second fob--I took them both in to get batteries replaced--and snapped it to the carabiner I have used for 40 years. I used to technical climb and bolder climb for years in Utah and at Yosemite--Half Dome and El Capitan. (BTW, the carabiners at Lowe’s are cheap. I bought carabiners through REI along with the rest of my climbing equipment and they all look brand new.) And if anyone wants a superb knife, since I sailed in Hawai’i I always kept a 3 1/2 inch serrated blade with a Marlin Spike. The spike COULD be used to grab a marlin as you are bringing it on board, but I used it to loosen knots formed from wet lines, downhalls, halyards, rigging, stays, and shrouds.

ONLY after getting home did I notice that my usual key was gone. I had used 1/4 inch skinny strips of white luminescent electrical tape to hold the casing together. The second fob was in pristine shape after 12 years since I never used it--kept it in my fireproof lock box I keep under the floorboards of my home. Took them both in to have the batteries replaced. Preventive maintenance. I had a whopping antero-lateral MI (heart attack) so wasn’t thinking clearly when I took the rental car from the ER parking lot at Emory and drove it back to the dealership. So the fob with all the luminescent strips is the one missing. I guess I need to go our when it’s pitch dark, disable the dome light, then look for the strips.

NEED TO FIGURE OUT DEACTIVATION system, then use metal key.

This SUCKS.

 

In order to disable the SKS, press in the button labelled with a key symbol. The button is located on the lower dash under the steering column.

It is covered in the owner's manual.

I already DID! I still have BOTH original 2006 Owner’s Manuals (one in Japanese and one in English) and I read each step...carefully! I followed all instructions before coming on PriusChat to have men “mansplain” stuff to me.

On page 34 in both the English and Japanese manuals the illustration “21p152" shows:
1. Smart function is on (Button is fully out)
2. Smart function is off. (Button is depressed)

But depressing the button doesn’t deactivate the SKS! Here in the state of Georgia, Toyota dealerships have no clue what a Japanese car is--only Fords and Chevys. So I called Servco in Honolulu, HI in Kakaako--body repair and engine work area makai of the downtown business district. (Hawai’i doesn’t use north, east... Our directions have to do with are they near the mountain (mauka) or near the ocean (makai).
I know these guys and spoke with the head of the service dept. He had NO idea what the “key” button was. I sent him an iMessage that showed pix of both page 34 of the instruction manual AND a pix of the buttons underneath my steering column. I Facetimed with their service guys (ALL descendants of Japanese) and the FIRST thing they asked me was: “How’s your service dog Sammy?” --My avatar. I told them Sammy had died in 2015, so they all started talking about Sam--some great stories--BUT GUYS! NOT NOW!

The Prius’ were recalled as there was a problem with the splines in the steering column--nothing like elven years later to be correcting a problem. They said that if the service guys didn’t know what they were doing, they could have removed or damaged the circuitry of the SKS and deactivation buttons.

They actually advised that I call the Prius assembly plant which is now the Tsutsumi plant in Aichi prefecture, Japan. I asked if anyone spoke English at the plant and they said only Japanese. I said my Japanese was a little rusty and I certainly didn’t know enough to speak with an engineer in Aichi. They said that they had a guy from that prefecture (kinda like a state or province) but he was on vacation....in Las Vegas.

So they put my name and phone number on his desk with a note to call me when he gets back to Honolulu. (Inside info--only two of the fifty states have ZERO gambling--not even lottery or scratch off cards. And I lived in both: Hawai’i and Utah. So the #1 vacation spot for residents of Hawai’i is Las Vegas! There are three to four Airbus 380s (853 passengers each) that are chartered every Friday night from Honolulu to Las Vegas and return Sunday night. There’s some useless trivia for ya.

So the “Law of Unintended Consequences.” They fix the steering column splines per recall but then destroyed the deactivation system. So next week I hope to have an answer. Too bad that this car works so well or I would trade it in! A Prius is akamai (smart) in Hawai’i but STUPID in the Southern states.
