[HELP] Engine replacement question

The only thing they may have done related to the 12 volt battery was disconnect it to prevent the battery from draining .

Some questions:

• Did the engine get replaced?
• How is your Prius running?
• Are there any dash lights?
• How many miles have you put in since the engine replacement?

if a lost plastic cover is your only issue, i think you did well. what did they say when you asked them about it?

Am I correct on that? What are you thinking, they mighta swapped batteries?

 

There is certainly evidence that the hybrid battery has been worked on at some point.

The photo in post 5 is the passenger side of the battery where the air outlet duct attaches to the HV battery case. It should have a black plastic 'push in' retainer.

The last photo in post one shows the entire cover for the electronics portion of the battery is missing. None of those wires should be visible. Also, the white plastic clip on the left side of that photo should be inserted into the slotted hole directly behind it to lock that wire harness in place. Just more evidence the battery was removed. That cover is also what clamps the HV cables where they enter the HV battery case. That clamp is what ensures the outer braided wire shield of the HV cables is electrically grounded to the case of the battery/car body. If there is no cover installed, I would have a slight concern about that cable not being properly grounded.

Remove the interior trim panel that is on top of the HV battery and post a photo of the top of the battery and a photo of the serial number sticker.

 

Take it back to them and see what they say.

Ask them for the code print out. If it is just the check engine light, it wouldn’t be anything with the hv battery as that has other lights and messages.

Post up the code or codes once you have them.

If that's all you got to bitch about after an engine replacement you live a charmed life. You must not have seen what they have to go through for that job.

Yeah take it to the dealer and ask them to check for funny business. They will get the car right up on the rack and start the $$$$ clock.

 

The first two things I would do on an engine swap in a Prius is disconnect the 12 V battery and the pull the plug on the high voltage battery.

I don't think you will be using that shop again.

 

If the car sat there for 6 weeks, they took the aux battery out of the car because they had to charge it. Some minor shoddy work hopefully not done by the engine mechanic. I would have them fix it. The missing push fastener is the fan duct, it needs to come out to put the battery back in although that fastener usually does not need to be removed. It was likely broken when removed and he didn't replace it or maybe its in the same place as the cover. . Rookie mistake.

 

It's not necessary to remove the 12 volt battery to charge it. I know the Owner's Manual says to do that, but it's their lawyers talking. Our car's battery spends more time on the charger then off, with a quick-connect, never remove it for charging.

 

This is probably shop policy. You can really create a dangerous situation if the aux battery ever got reconnected with an engine partially out. Its not your traditional engine/electrical design. I agree with you Mendel. Putting a trickle charger harness on the aux battery and using it when the car sits for more than a week is a good idea.

Also, prius's need to be used. Long periods of not charging the HV battery can be bad. There is a line in the service manual if I remember correctly. "If the car is not started for three months the HV battery may completely discharge and need to be replaced" That gets my attention.
