I've searched both my Owner's and Nav Manuals, as well as this forum using several different terms, and still come up with zip.

My questions is whether there is a way to have the Nav system display your altitude, along with other position info?

GPS is, of course, a "3D" system, and the receiver is constantly calculating not only your lat/long, but also your altitude as well. In my last car, I used an inexpensive Garmin unit attached to a bracked suction cupped to the windshield. It was definitely a compromise setup (with dangling cords and all...), but it did easily allow a GPs altitude readout (not baro). One could argue that in a car, which you hope will stay firmly on the ground, altitude is irrelevant. OTOH, I like having it, and even after less than a week, I miss it, and figure I can use the altitude-delta info to help work the n-th degree of precision into my fuel saving driving technique.

Am I missing something obvious, or does the Prius GPS interface simply not allow for the display of altitude info? Thanks for your input.

    Nope...unfortunately.

No altitude display, though you would think it is capable, as the diagnostics does distinguish 2D and 3D GPS reception. It's probably there though for accuracy.

Thanks to both of you for the responses, disappointing as they may be. It should be really easy, as my sub-$200 Garmin etrex Legend will allow you to select or deselect altitude readout on several of the available displays. Perhaps it's time for a foray to the dark side of the internet. Of course, if I try a hack, and screw it up, my wife will hack me to pieces. . .

Just curious. My "other" GPS shows altitude also but it never appears quite right to me. (I live pretty near sea level so common sense helps me deduce this.) I know why the GPS has to know this but, short of wanting to know when to put on your oxygen mask, what benefit does knowing your altitude provide the average user?

I have a 2012 Prius 3 and my GPS does show altitude, right below the lat/lon info. My problem is that the altitude is shown in MILES, not feet. Not very useful when that altitude is shown as 0.4 miles! My owner's manual shows the display in yards. Does anyone know how to display feet?
