So I've done a lot of research on what's going on with my 05 Prius and can't really figure it out. The 12 volt had died about a year ago because the dome lights were left on. Got it charged back up and it was fine for about a year. The car failed to start on 2 different occasions and all problems pointed to the 12 volt. Put a new one in and no problems starting now, but yesterday I drove it about 12 miles with no issues with the AC running. Got a bite to eat and went to leave and several warning lights on the dash came on. Car seem to run fine, but I noticed the batteries were not charging like they should. I put my scanner on it and cleared the codes. Of course I couldn't read the codes by not having the proper software according to what I've read. I drove it probably 10 to 15 miles since and it only charged up 1 bar. Battery fan in the back seat seems to be running more than normal. Enough that I noticed it. The battery is basically stuck on 2 bars. I've got disturbance in the inverter pump tank. Lots of bubbles. BTW, car has 120,000 miles on it. I've owned since about 71,000 with no issues other than the 12 volt. So is this all pointing to the hybrid battery failing?

    Unfortunately yes:(.

Getting the codes read will help in diagnosis;).

What part of the country are you located in?

    Keep us posted (y).

Midwest. Indiana. Man I didn't want to hear that, but kinda expected it. Do you know much about a repair company called green bean? Suppose to come to your location and swap out batteries. Haven't dug into it to much, but looks like about 1600 bucks. Thanks for the information to BTW!

I guess to answer your questions, I ask some back;).

This will help with next steps :):

    1. Seems low mileage. How long do you want to keep the car?
    2. Condition of your Prius?
    3. Are you the DIY type?
    4. How important is uninterrupted service from your car?

Search around here, but any remanufactured battery will not give as good a service as a new battery.

@2k1Toaster sells new modules as a kit, so if the DIY type, that’s a great option ;).

For $1600 you can do better than a remanufactured battery IMO. I have the Prolong equipment from Hybrid Automotive and I use it to maintain my hv battery pack. I share the charger and Discharger with a member out here and he just used it to rebuild a pack for a Prius. We also helped another member rebuild his pack in a similar manner, replacing the bad modules and reconditioning the whole pack with the new module:).

So there are options. Just depends on your wants and needs;).

Hope that helps and keep us posted (y).

I like to drive them until they will no longer go. Its in good shape, but does have a rebuilt title. The car set for probably 3 or 4 years prior to me buying it, but like I said not had an issue with it. Idk much about this type of repairs. I like to try and diy, but not sure about this. As far as the car being down, it doesn't matter. I've got another vehicle to drive. So what kinda money am I looking at if I go that route?

Just lost my '05 hybrid battery, so fresh experience. Yep, sounds like you lost yours too. Raytheeagle is right, get the codes to confirm. P0A80 is one, usually followed by a code related to the cell that failed. However, "several warning lights" (for the '05 usually master warning, engine check, brake, and VSC warning lights) and a battery indicator that doesn't act right, were the first two symptoms I noticed.

While the warning lights are on, the car will run okay as long as you take it easy. However if you put any acceleration demands on it, you will probably be disappointed. So, don't jump into traffic, make sure the way is clear. You will also experience hesitations starting out, which will add to your alarm should you attempt to pull out into traffic.

With the master warning on, cruise will not turn on, and the battery fan will blow. The battery will not recharge if your A/C is on. As a matter of fact, it will quickly drain. I recommend skipping the use of A/C until you get the car repaired.

So out of curiosity, before the battery died, were full tanks only giving you 40 MPG or so? I believe that was a pre-indicator that my hybrid battery was going to die.

After getting the codes read and considering the DIY routes:

    • Prolong equipment (charger Discharger and harness): $800
    • One module:$30-50 (you could just replace modules without balancing)
    • Get a battery from a rebuilder like green been battery (see your cost above)
    • Get 2k1toasters kit for $1600, assemble in your old case then sell the remaining modules online
    • Buy a new pack from Toyota
    Hope that helps(y).

Thanks Wayne. Its showing 41.5 at the moment. The best I've probably ever gotten on a entire tank is around 48. It also depends on whos driving it. I seem to get better mpg than she does. I don't think I've ever had a entire tank that low, but I haven't driven it much since I put the 12 volt in. Yesterday was the first time we've driven the car in about 10 days.

Replaced traction battery last week in my 2006 Prius. It cost me $550 for rebuild one with 1 year warranty. Guy comes to your place and all process takes about 1 hour. I am in Philadelphia, PA.

I would get a confirmation of the hybrid battery failure and the cause by having the battery stress tested using Toyota (TechStream) diagnostic. Likely a dealer, but anyone focused on Toyota hybrids can do it.

I recently replaced my 2007 hybrid battery for $995. My son and I did the replacement based on some very good YouTube videos. It took about 90 minutes. I purchased the refurbished battery from Hometown Hybrids out of Houston. They were great to deal with and gave a 2 year warranty. The price included freight both ways. I think anyone with good mechanic skill can do the job. You just need to be careful and safe around that much electricity.

You should really have TechStream software and the ODB cable which you can get on Ebay for $35. Not sure where you are located, but there may be a good shop around you. hchu1, you should stop in to HomeTown, and check them out, since they are in your neighborhood.

Ok thanks John McG. I've called a shop near where I live and they said they could read it. Definitely doing that before anything. Hchu1. I called the scottsburg repair place. That might be the way to go. 775 installed rebuilt battery with a 1 year warranty. Cheaper than that if you pay cash. I think 1295 for a 2 year warranty and 2395 for a brand new one from Toyota. Thanks for all the info. It helps so much.

Local is often best and that's a pretty good price if they know what their doing. My Prius ran better than it has in a few months after replacing the battery. Everything just worked right. Mileage increased significantly.

These batteries do not last when not being used. 3 to 4 years is a detriment to batteries, any batteries.

So I got the past codes read today. Came up with p0a80 and c1242. I know what the first one is, but what is the second one? Does it go along with the first? Question though. I drove my Prius to town earlier to get the codes read and the battery started charging and acting normal unlike last weekend when it wouldn't charge. Also all the lights came back on after he pulled the codes. Car still ran fine though. Is all this normal when the battery goes bad?

The C1242 should have a detail code in the FFD (freeze frame data) – either 87 or 88 to pin point the fault location:

DTC No. Detailed Code DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
1 C1242/42 87 Voltage is applied to IG2 terminal; but not applied to IG1 terminal for at least 4 sec.
    • ABS NO. 1 relay
    • Harness and connector
    • Skid control power supply circuit
    • Brake control power supply assembly
    • Hybrid control system
2 C1242/42 88 Voltage is applied to IG1 terminal; but not applied to IG2 terminal for at least 4 sec.
    • ABS NO. 2 relay
    • Harness and connector
    • Skid control power supply circuit
    • Brake control power supply assembly
    • Hybrid control system

Step one of the inspection procedure is to check if hybrid control system DTCs are output. If there are any hybrid control system DTCs, then repair the hybrid control system before doing any other inspection. If there are no hybrid control system DTCs, then inspect for the C1242. P0A80 is a hybrid battery control–hybrid battery system DTC. Hybrid control system seems to be a collective term for the entire hybrid vehicle control which includes the HV battery, inverter and transaxle among other lesser components.

I have attached the inspection procedure for the C1242.

    Hope that helps.

I would put the "c-code" on the back burner for right now. You have a failed/weak HV battery and it's my guess that once you get that fixed the car will have proper and steady voltages and the other code will go away (once cleared).
