Full Size Spare Info

    Finally got around to finding a wheel so I can use a full size spare on long trips. The wheel came from Summit Racing and was only $42. It's very good quality and powder-coated so would make a nice set of wheels for those of you needing a spare winter set. I used one of my old Toyo's and the wheel/tire combo only weighs 14 pounds more than the space-saver spare. I also had to get a longer hold down bolt (M8x90mm) and file it down from a 14mm hex to a 13mm so it would fit in the hold down handle. I could have just put a washer under the head and used it as is but then I would have had to carry a 14mm wrench along. The foam deck floor won't fit over the spare but the floor board is enough to allow support for luggage and other things.

    Is that the kosher foam pieces for a full-size spare? It certainly looks good. Are you saying the full-size spare protrudes up a bit too much still, when the hatch deck is put in?

    Personally I would stick with a temp spare if I was in that situation, for the more compact dimensions, but that looks good.

    If I try to drop a full-size spare (one of our mounted snow tires) into the well on our 3rd gen, it's rubbing the sidewalls of the cavity, not quite fitting.

    No, same foam pieces that came with the car and donut spare. However, the center one doesn't fit into the full size wheel so I will just leave that one out when traveling.

    Yes, but the deck board still fits over just fine. However, I plan on using foam insulation board to fill the surrounding area to prevent the deck board from getting deformed. I'll report back when I'm done.

    The light bulb goes on: you HAD a temp spare, this is just your road trip strategy. Ok.

    Personally I'd be ok with temp spare on a road trip, but opinions vary I know.

    Here's the steel rim I use for snow tires, for reference:

    Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)

    It looks it is some type of universal wheel with various holes for different vehciles?

    I looked into that wheel first but it was 4x the list price of the one in my link.

    My reason for wanting a full size spare was from my blowout experience last year. Had to replace a tire in South Dakota but no LRR tires could be had. Even the Toyota dealer would have had to order a tire. So, I did what I had to do. I bought a mediocre tire for the rest of my trip which was like throwing money away. Now, if I ever have a repeat, I will throw on the full size spare and finish my trip.

    Yes, wheel has both the 5x100 and 5x115 lug pattern.

    Say roughly 4x42=$168. Maybe I got a sweet heart deal, they were $70 CDN apiece when I bought 4 in conjunction with a snow tire install through a local dealership, November 2010. They might have been take-offs, but they certainly looked very new.

    Hmm, see they're $105 US apiece, through McGeorge Toyota, price significantly higher, plus shipping.

    Even when you have a space saver spare things aren't perfect. I was on a trip to Pa. on a Saturday evening and had a flat tire. If there would have been a Walmart or somewhere I could have a new tire installed I would have taken the time to get a new tire. I had the space saver spare and installed it and finished the last 150 miles on it. The next day I went to Sears in my hometown and bought a new tire and installed it on the car. I was glad I had the space saver but a full size wheel is still the best thing. You don't want tire trouble especially on a trip and at night.

    So, as it turns out, the sidewall of the full size spare tire is within 1/8" of the surrounding foam. Since the original filler piece doesn't fit within the FS wheel, I laminated some foam insulation and made two new filler pieces so the floor board will have more support when carrying heavier items like luggage and the occasional body rolled up in a carpet:eek:. I also used some flex-seal rubberized coating on the pieces to give them a tough shell that will resist coming apart. It's as road trip ready as it'll ever be.

    Looks good. It would be nice if some aftermarket company would make the foam parts at a reasonable price.

    The no place to put a spare of any kind caused me to walk away from a beautiful awd Prius this week . I am assuming that your gen 4 is fwd

    I just went to Town Fair Tire and purchased a whole new FS rim and tire. My 2019 XLE awd-e won't accommodate a spare where it should normally fit. I read that there is an inverter that would interfere with a spare tire. So the part that should reveal the spare is riveted in place. Just to make sure it would all work. I drove the car into my garage and jacked it up with the Prius jack included with the car and removed left rear tire to swap it out. The steel rim mounted up perfectly but it relies on the taper off the lugs not the flat washer and counter bore of the normal aluminum rim. It tightens down with sufficient threads onto the taper of the lug and wheel. It spins round and round no problem. I conveniently had the perfect length (41") tarp straps to X it down with the vehicle cargo hooks. Hopefully I never need this. Roadside assistance is great if you have cell service.
