Tire pressure gauges, I bought 2 new ones, reading is way off from my old one

Hey everyone, I figured it was time to get a digital gauge. When I check with my old analog gauge I got 39 psi but with the digital I got 33.5. I then bought a harbor freight analog to compare and got 33.5. Either I've been driving all this time with lower pressure or the new ones are way way off. I wonder if the diaphragm or whatever moves the needle in analog gauges wears out over time.

no doubt. i would have to go with the 2 new ones. ask at a gas station to see what theirs shows.

I didn't have an answer but I did some searching on the internet. One guy says old tire gauges are know to be inaccurate. You would have to compare them to a know accurate gauge and I would compare them at say 20, 30 and 40 psi. I would think + or - 1 psi would be good in my world. For real precision measurements you would need something like the Fluke 700 series gauge to do testing.

How close do you want your readings is the question.

that's the advantage of running them on the high side. or at least thinking you are.

Go with the digital. You have two that read identical. The old analog ones are prone to dirt and wear.

I would avoid any gauge at a gas-station since they get so much abuse. I have a number of digital gauges, and they all seem to line up with each other. The one currently in the car is this one ($25 from amazon)

I'm surprised that the TPMS system in Toyota's don't have a digital readout. Sure would make finding the low tire easier. Cost would be my guess. I think they use it in some high end models especially Lexus.

I've got a couple of reliable stick-style; you're pretty much set for life with those. The one thing that can wear out is the gasket where you push it onto the valve, wish you could get replacement for those.

This is what I got recently, for myself and a couple of our kids:

I thought about hooking up my computer to the car since I have the obd hookup and the program but it takes a while to boot up that old computer. The software needed a 32 bit old version of windows so luckily I had a super old laptop laying around. That would be interesting to see what it reads. The data is there so they just didn't care to add it to the readout =/

I'll retire the old one. I bet it's really really old since I don't remember buying it. I have 2 digital gauges and one new analog and they all seem within 1 psi of each other.

correct. i think there is a thread here about reading the pressures with scan gauge.

Yes, still using the stick guage to measure the tire pressures. Have a roundal digital guage somewhere.

Have an analog round gauge given to me by my father, who warned me to NEVER< EVER<

    drop it.

It is a German company. It works quite well. I also have a digital that my husband bought and keeps in his car. Both of them pretty much agree. His is an Accutire brand. Got it at k_Mart for around $10.

I prefer the round old-school gauge, but then, it was given to me by my father. Don't remember the name, but German and I think starts with an S.

    Never giving that one up.

Some of us need to get a life if increasing your Prius mpg by .001 mpg makes your day.:ROFLMAO:

I prefer analog if only to avoid having to replace batteries. This is what I use:

Of course, with any type of gauge, try not to drop it...

I need to get all my gauges together and compare them. If one is way off from the others I win get rid of it.

What if the odd-man-out was the only one that was accurate?

But yeah, chances are you're right.

Something for automotive stores to consider: a check station, for pressure gauges and torque wrenches.

That's exactly what I was worried about =/. If there was a place that had pressured air regulated at an exact level of like 50psi then anyone can bring their gauges to test
