245000 miles, needs catalytic converter, MFD is dead, brakes never done, needs two tires, lacks bottom engine spoiler, burns 2 qt oil each 5000 miles, gets 46 mpg, runs fine. Should I sell as is & buy a new one, or fix it up?

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

    Guessing you're the original owner.

On the highway, how fast do you generally drive? (this can effect oil consumption)

What OBD2 code did you get for the catalytic converter, p0420?

Used cats go quick around here, you might have better luck finding one out of state. And the dealer is around 1300.

What else, if anything on the car has been replaced up to this point?

If you sell it, what do you think you can get?

    New cat is around $1500
Engine work from oil burning $1500+
    Needs combination meter
    245000 miles

I'd say buy another lower mileage 2nd gen and keep yours for parts

You'd get so little for the car as is. Best to invest into something with less miles and no problems. You could replace the whole cat yourself if you can have a friend ship from out of state. I paid 350 plus shipping fees. Cut and installed myself. Course not legal in California but smog place hasn't noticed. Only if you can do some of this work yourself is it feasible. Paying a shop or Toyota I'd invest in something else.

Actually I have a brand new Non CA compliant Cat from Magnaflow, just cut the old one out and weld on the new one. $100 if you want it.

Get rid of the car? Curious why you have the cat. Magnaflo one in mine.

A quart every 2500 miles is even better(y).

Since the cat has gone bad, oil burning is probably more than 1qt every 2500 miles
