Featured Prius crushes the rest of the affordable EV sales

Perhaps Toyota is simply correcting for the first year's distribution. They prioritized the West Coast and Northeast at first because of CARB states. As with the PiP, this lead to inventory to stack up in the NE. But the middle got few 2017s. So 2018s go there first to cover the deficiency, and to allow places with excess 2017s time to move them out.

Keep in mind the elephant in the room Califiornia is kicking old plug-ins out of the HOV lanes. So you will need new wheels if you are going to stay in HOV. In a few weeks we will get Ca. sales numbers 1Q2018 and see what % of sales are in Ca for plug-ins. .

 

see? that's a GREAT thing ... perfect motivation to get that new (nearly) 50 mile Chevy plugin ... gets you to work - even 20+ miles away from work & back home again, even if no recharging at work, using the HOV lane, where you plug into to home PV. 90%+ driving just like a pure ev. Live is good.

Just buy an used phev or BEV from another state that CA has never seen with stickers. That is even cheaper than buying new.

 

do you have to be a resident of CA to get a CA hov sticker? i'm wondering if there's a black market (e.g. I have NO plans to ever move to CA so my car will never get a CA hov sticker that I can ever use).

right now the prius liftback + prime outsold the model 3 long range, by 23%. My guess is the model 3 will be the best seller in q4.

I was really giving the top hybrid, plug-in, or fuel cell cars. It is interesting that top seller is a bev, the next 3 are hybrids, then the next 1 is the phev version of the top selling hybrid. I would argue that once tesla can make enough model 3's it will be quite affordable.

And in case you wanted one of those fuel cell cars that is supposed to be more affordable than a tesla because of greater subsidies - from the above link.

 

well - if you combine Prime & liftbacks - what with the numbers be if the model 3 was combined with the x and s.

A few interesting numbers for US sales in May

31,919 hybrid sales (no plug)
24,560 plug-in sales (phev + bev)
10,986 diesel sales (dominated by transit van and pick up trucks)
151 fuel cell sales

9,220 Tesla sales (S3X) (37.5% of plug-in sales)
We can expect US tesla sales to tank in June as it is expected that they will manage inventory and shipments to pass the 200,000 number in July instead of June (which gives the tax credit an extra quarter of a year). I would further expect July, September, and December model 3 sales and profits to be higher than the prius combined with the prius prime. Key in the crushing is to leave tesla out of it, because somehow tesla's are not affordable. I would say the standard pack will be available on the model 3 next year, and even without the tax credit the car will be affordable. Model X and S, are priced too high for most people.

The may trend makes it look like US sales of plug-ins will exceed hybrids in 2019. The million plug-ins on american roads should happen in early 2019 also. China plug-in market is growing even faster than the US. If Toyota gets more sales people trained and more availability, I would expect the prime to outpace non plug-in prius sales in 2019.

not sure what you mean by that, prime battery is twice as big as pip, and has not changed since inception.
the rebate has continually gone up as toyota has had to cut profit to move cars.

 

Maybe the 10% live in a world where $34k for a car is affordable, but the other 90% are trying to pay rent or a mortgage, save for the kids schooling and I hope for retirement. I happened to watch a middle of the road model 3 configuration today stop at $54k. I didn't see anything about the price numbers that was affordable to the average Joe or Jill. And the numbers get worse when the federal tax subsidy gets smaller or disappears.

Yes the Model 3 entry price will come down but I also saw high $70k Model 3 configurations. Aspirational, not affordable.

 

OK I was thinking you were saying fed tax credit went to $5000 but I guess that is still unchanged at $4502 for Prime

 

...fyi I calc'ed 55% of PHEV sold in Ca first quarter...which is higher than normal 45%...perhaps reflecting consumers trying to get new HOV stickers...but OTOH I have seen 1st Quarter numbers high before and then came back in line.

BEV was about as usual around 47-50% sold in Ca.
