Hi Sara - Thank you for that information and the photos!

I have a few more, if you don't mind:
    (1) Are the three little switches you mentioned all on or near the EON and easy to reach, or other places like under the dash?
    (2) In the first screenshot you posted showing the dash cam quality, the road has no painted lines. How does the system handle a road like that?
    (3) Do you remove your EON when you park?
    (4) Do you remove the system if you go in to the dealership for service (to prevent them claiming it voids your warranty)?

    And one more question:

    (5) As regards transferring the video to empty the storage, you mentioned using your wifi connection. I have fast broadband cable (not fiber optic), but it still takes about 20 minutes to upload a 2 GB file, which means I guess it would take about 9 hours to "empty" my EON. I'd like to get this for a very long road trip, but it sounds like common broadband upload speeds, even if I could find a decent wifi signal on the trip, would make offloading/uploading the video all but impossible. Or am I missing something?

    Thank you!

1.) There's actually a total of 4 switches. One stays on always and the other 3 get switched on or off depending on what you want. The switches are behind the rear view mirror. Just push it to the side, flip the switches, and put it back the way you like it.

2.) On that particular road, the car likes to center itself in the middle. If there were a center line, it would not try to use the grass as 'boundries' but would use the center line. The speed limit on this road is 15 though so you shouldn't be trying to use it there anyway. The Prius likes to cruise at 27mph when it doesn't have a follow car.

3.) I remove it at night when I'm at home because we've had a vehicle break-in at this location before. Someone stole an iPad that was left on a seat. At work and other places, I just leave it there unless it's like 80+ degrees. Phones don't like extreme heat.

4.) I've got a car inspection due this month. I'm thinking about just unplugging the white cord and setting the switches to stock so it just looks like a dashcam. The Toyota I take my car to isn't the one I bought it from though so I doubt they could void my warranty anyways. Not to mention I actually have a sunroof cut into the car. Can't really hide that modification. Hahaha

5.) There's a slightly more expensive version with double the storage space. I haven't had a need for it since it's always been adequate at offloading the dashcam data for when I need it.

Okay, great. That's all very helpful. I guess my estimates of how long uploading a full device would take are in line with your experience? Though I imagine you don't let it fill up before you're offloading/uploading the data. Thanks!

The upload speed is very dependant to your actual internet speed. I think mine is like moderate. You can test that by googling 'speed test' on your phone or computer. Then you'll be able to calculate exactly how long it will take for you. Here's mine. Screenshot_20180606-175236.jpeg

My upload is 30Mbps. Uploading 50GB of video would take almost four hours at that speed. That isn't very practical. On a long road trip, you'd be hard put to find any kind of wifi that you could use to upload that much data, and you'd probably get around 10Mpbs at best on any public wifi, which means it would take about 12 hours to upload 50GB.

if you had a little laptop or something with you, you would be able to manually delete the data from the device. It's a little bit technical but you just need to connect to the device via SSH and then navigate to /storage/self/primary/realdata/* and delete the drive videos.

Wow, you must be a lot technical! If you know that is possible, I'm sure my brother could show me how to do it. He is an advanced coder, so this would probably be easy for him.

I just spoke with my brother and he said he thought that to delete the files like this using an SSH connection, he would need the username and password, which he thinks might be the normal Android phone user account. What would I use for the username and password for the SSH connection? My brother said you could use something like PuTTY to connect via SSH from a Windows laptop, but he's wondering not about your specific username and password, but which one I would use and how I would determine what my username and password would be.

Show him my videos on YouTube. I'm not super technically advanced but I made some simple how to's. He should be able to figure everything out from them. (Videos are super short too)

Great, those helped. My brother said, "It appears that [you] accessed an Eon device as user "root" and did not enter a password, which implies that the device has no root password configured by default. I also found a Configuring OpenPilot wiki page that said the Eon has no passwords needed." He said he should be able to do it.

If I could bother you for one more thing, could you post a couple of pictures showing the exact mounting location of your EON. I mean side views that would show precisely where the mounting tab is. I need to figure out my options for how I can mount it in relation to my current dash cam. And do you think mounting it any lower than you have it would work, or do you think that would limit its functionality due to a poorer view of the road?

It would be fine a bit lower or higher. The thing you need to worry about is it facing straight ahead and not facing left or right. You want to camera on the phone to be fairly centered. It's less critical.
If you get the YAW perfectly straight, you won't really have to be precise with anything else really. Screenshot_20180609-220031__01.jpeg Screenshot_20180609-220059__01.jpeg Screenshot_20180609-220010.jpeg 1200px-Flight_dynamics_with_text.jpeg

Thank you very much! Given what you've said, I'll probably have my brother help me mount it, too. In addition to his coding abilities, he's also an aerospace engineer and retired Air Force pilot. He'll understand yaw, pitch and roll.

It looks like yours is about an inch right of center, so I guess that must be okay, too? Did you add the "PRIME" lettering on the back of your EON's housing?

Haha yeah they're mailbox stickers I got from the store. I painted and threw stickers all over it so it would fit in with my car more.

What is the longest trip anyone has taken using OpenPilot with an EON with 50 Gigs of ram? How many Gigs did you have to upload at end of the trip? Did you connect to WiFi during the trip? 200 miles Overland Park, KS to Emporia, KS, and back. Interstate I-35.The EON has a sim with unlimited 4G LTE. No WiFI until home. Appox. 7 Gigs to upload at home. Temp 98. 4hrs duration. Stopped in Emporia to eat DQ. Next week 500 miles to Dallas, TX.

I am going to get one of these, and I do want to participate fully and provide the data to Comma.ai since they want it to make the product better. But uploading such large amounts of data without fiber optic broadband is very time consuming. I have a fast internet connection, but uploading just those 7GB would have taken me about one hour or more.

    (1) You mentioned that the EON comes with unlimited 4G LTE. Is the idea behind that that you can use it to upload the data? Or is that for the apps on the EON?

    (2) When uploading the data over wifi, do you take the EON inside your house to upload the data, or do you leave your car on and upload it? I want to understand more about how the EON works.

    (3) Do you have the "comma power" unit (photo below)? Their website says: "Use your car's OBD-II port to power your Toyota giraffe with the comma power. By keeping the panda always powered, it will fix the "cruise fault" issue."

Someone else in this thread said you need the following three items, but they did not list the "comma power":

    1. Panda OBD-II Donge White (Standard) --- $99
    2. Giraffe (Toyota) --- $60
    3. EON Dashcam Dev kit --- $699

Thanks for any information you can provide.

The Sim card with unlimited data is if you want the unit to upload data all by itself without needing to take it inside the house ever. It also let's you use the Spotify and Waze navigation apps. Otherwise you would only be able to use the apps on the EON if you setup a phone hotspot and connected to it.

If you park close enough to your house that you can get wifi from the driveway, you can leave it in the car. Otherwise take it inside so it can connect and upload. You don't need to leave the car running.

The comma power is not needed. That's just so the EON stays charged and on constantly. You can always take it inside and plug it in to the wall. They give you two power cords for it to plug it in. It uses a mini USB plug. The EON has probably got a 24 hour built in battery. If you did another optional mod(unplug the DSU) then you might get the cruise fault error when you turn the car on occasionally. If you don't mind turning the car off and back on to clear the error, then don't bother with it.

The only negative to the comma power besides having to buy an extra thing is that if you leave your car sitting and not drive it for days on end, the battery might be drained trying to keep the Eon powered.

I forgot to mention I have a gray panda. I bought the comma power and with the comma power plugged in, the ac keeps running and the heads-up display stays lit when the ignition is turned off. I don't use it anymore. I bring the EON inside my house to charge. It takes me a couple of hours to upload the 7 Gigs and in that time span, my car is charging and ready to go. I don't care if it takes over a couple of hours to upload. Besides, it can upload while I sleep. All I want to know is what is the longest trip anyone has taken using OpenPilot and how many Gigs were on the unite at the end of the trip. I took the road trip as an experiment to find out about a 200-mile trip. 500 miles is next weekend. I have plans for a trip to Pittsburgh (850 miles). I don't want to disconnect the OpenPilot while on that trip or destroy the collected data. The OpenPilot is much safer in terms of Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and the Lane Departure Warning is hard to hear. I have taken my car into two dealers for maintenance and not a word was said about my plugged in equipment. If the did they would be told about the crap they have in the car as a safety feature.

Your comma power is backfeeding power into the ignition which is keeping the AC and HUD powered on even when the ignition is off. You need to flip a switch on your giraffe. neo/giraffe/toyota at master · commaai/neo · GitHub

I took a 2000 mile trip and nearly filled up my 128gb EON. It took forever (several days) to upload all the data. lol.

It sucks too, because you can't connect to free wifi that has a splash page. (I agree to your terms of service McDonalds sorta thing.)
