Be Careful about the ECO menu if you don't want to Reset Total MPG!

While I occasionally reset TRIP A and TRIP B to see the MPG under various situations (all EV, all gas, hills, a certain route, etc) I had always assumed you could never reset the MPG on the car's (total) "odometer" screen on the MFD (shown under your current speed). For instance, my car has about 12,000 miles, and it recently showed 120.3 MPG over those 12,000 miles (because some of my driving is 100+ miles roundtrip with no place to charge, so I have to use more gas than those who have short commutes that can use all EV). And unlike with TRIP A or TRIP B, there was no physical button to push to clear or reset that MPG by the total odometer miles, while you can easily push a button to clear/reset TRIP A or TRIP B.

Well, I was recently tinkering with some of the screens I never bother with after initially setting up, and somehow... I RESET my Total Odometer MPG without meaning to!! And of course, there's no way to go back! So this is just a warning to people who want to keep a record of total MPG for the life of their car... be very careful what screens you tinker with. I have the Plus (the 7" screen) and I pushed the "ECO" icon to go to that set of screens. I forget where it was exactly, but it showed kind of a graph of usage (on the 7" screen, not the MFD) and I pressed a button to clear it, thinking it would just clear the data for the graph on the 7" screen, as it didn't appear to have anything to do with total MPG. But it also cleared the "MPG" number on the main odometer screen, so now my "total MPG for the life of the car" setting (that I thought could not be reset) was reset -- by hitting something on the 7" "ECO" screen somewhere. Darn. Oh well. So just a warning, everyone who doesn't want to reset that Total Odometer MPG number, be careful about clearing things on the ECO screen!

EDIT: OK, what clears the "total MPG" (at least on the 7" Plus screen) is: pressing ECO to get to the ECO screen. Then, pressing "UPDATE" will completely reset the total MPG as figured for your car's (total) odometer. One wouldn't think pressing "update" would do that. Live and learn.
    ---

So I got 120.3 MPG for 12,000 miles. Now it shows 199.9 (I have a 2017) because since this happened, I've only driven a few short trips in EV mode. Well, I suppose that "12,000" was the car's "toddler" age. Now I'll try not to reset it for its teenage, adult, and mature years :)

Odd, I would think that would be illegal for resale purposes.

Well it doesn't reset the ODOMETER, it resets the MPG reading for your (total, not Trip A or Trip B) Odometer...

    Interesting.

On a Corolla I recently rented, it had the same 7" screen and I was wondering what the "Update" did since I saw it on our car but I thought, it's a rental, no one would care lol.

It updated the mpg and the "Best mpg" on the ECO screen. But because the Corolla doesn't keep track of "lifetime" mpg, I didn't know that was linked on a Prius.

I assumed that on the Prius, you would reset it via the TRIP button and going to the ODO and pressing and holding TRIP like you would for Trip A or Trip B to reset the lifetime mpg.

Good to know that it's linked to the 7" screen.

Yup, pressing the physical button that resets Trip A or Trip B's MPG indeed resets Trip A and Trip B's MPGs when they're showing... but does nothing when the total odometer's MPG is showing. That's why I thought the total MPG couldn't be reset. But alas, it gets reset by pressing "UPDATE" on the ECO screen (who would've guessed?) I did it again just to make sure before posting this, and it not only resets the 7" screen info, but the MPG of the car's total miles on the MFD at the same time. Live and learn. So now I know never to push UPDATE again...
