I picked up my Prius Prime this past weekend (love it!). I keep getting emails from Sirius XM to confirm my email, since the dealer or Toyota must have provided it to them for the free trial. I don't want to open an account and then have to cancel the service after the trial is over, since I have zero interest in Sirius XM to begin with. Should I just ignore the emails? Thanks in advance everyone!

Yes. I still, get junk from them on the two 2014's I purchased much less the 2017. We've never used it once. The dealer provides them the info as part of the prep.

Just mark them as SPAM in your browser, future emails will then be dumped into the SPAM bucket!!!

You can also expect a few phone calls from them as well later on.

I did the free trial. And re-upped for 1 year. But I only listened to 3 stations. Total waste of money. Cancelled it. They refunded the balance. Now I get emails every week asking me to come back. Only $30 for 6 months. I still won't bite.

I didn't just ignore, I actively opted-out, I think I did it both over the phone and by e-mail. They never bothered me after that.

I just ended the Free Trial, signed up for the 6 months for $30, will threaten to cancel at that time and get 6 months for $30, that way I can keep that going forever...LOL. I only listen to just a few stations, any more than $30 for 6 months I won't pay.

When I purchased my Prius preowned, I called Sirius/XM to sign up and was told as a new owner, I would receive 3 free months. I was pleasantly surprised.

I made the mistake of signing up for Sirius XM in my previous cars and continuously renewing for $25 or $30 every six months, each time having to pretend to quit to get that rate. When I refused to give them my credit card number (so that they can't "accidentally" renew it at the full price every time), they charged a $2 invoice fee.

I got real tired of this business practice and of them repeatedly calling to have me resubscribe at the full price. For my new Prime, I didn't even both signing up for Sirius XM radio, and I never gave them any personal info.

Instead, I'm happily paying my monthly subscription fee to Spotify nowadays. Happy to reward companies that innovate and genuinely try to earn the Customer's loyalty, instead of the old-school sleazebag practices that Sirius still employs.

I am amazed how well Sirius XM has manage to emulate a cable company and all their undesirable practices. I don't know how they expect to please customers when you have to threaten to quit each year. It is just a matter of time when wireless internet will kill their business model and we will all have Spotify, etc. integrated into our systems. Having to do it now via my iPhone is inconvenient enough for me to subscribe at the "threaten to quite" price level, but it is right on the edge and it won't take much for me to cancel.

I don't listen to the radio and my wife loves it but I was surprised she didn't even try the free Sirius XM, she is set in her ways.
I loaded tons of music on a thumb drive and she does love that. When she is not with me I turn the radio off.

It was awesome in 2002-2003 era when I first got it. I can't stand commercials. Had it in almost 10 vehicles at one point. Only listened to 2-3 channels 99% of the time. On cross country journeys not having to find a new station every hour was nice. But in 2008 or 2009 I started streaming in my car using my cell connection and it worked just as well.

One of those channels was BBC Radio 1 time shifted by 5 hours which was nice to align GMT with Eastern Time. They inexplicably dropped the station near the end of 2011 and that was the last straw. Called up and cancelled. Everytime they called for a good couple years I would flat out tell them, "I paid you full price for a decade on 10 radios to listen to 2 stations. You took one away. Add that back in, and I will pay again." I didn't do any of that fake quitting stuff. The price they were asking seemed fair to me.

Well now I still listen to BBCR1 for free streamed over a cell connection. When driving through the boonies I will listen to a timeshifted program so that if I lose cell reception for a few minutes the music never stops. But usually I listen live and it works great. Sirius will go the way of the dodo in the next decade if I had to guess.

And I will hold on to my unlimited pre-Cingular 1990's AT&T data plan forever... I think it will become a family heirloom passed on down the generations.

Make sure to send back their pre-paid marketing envelopes. The USPS could use the extra few dimes.

I believe if you're making a dubious online purchase it's possible to get a temporary credit card number, one that'll expire in a few days? Dealing with those guys, I would go that route if possible: they WILL auto-renew you, regardless of what you've asked them. For that reason alone, I would just stay clear.

On my '08 Accord I keep getting a 3 years for $99 offer. Waiting for that offer to arrive for my Prius before I bite.

Just a general trick for these types of things, you can buy prepaid Visa gift cards pretty much anywhere for about $5 plus the amount loaded on. They are a fully functional credit card and the number doesn't really expire but you control the money on it. And when you're done with the burner card, you can just trash it. Not tied to any account, any address, anything.

I actually use one of those gift cards I got from buying tires (buy 4 get a $100 visa gift card type deal) that I spent all but ~$1 and use that for anything that requires a cc for verification. Leave a dollar or 2 on there and it will always verify as a valid card.
