I have a Prius excel (uk version) and the interior lights do not come on when I open the door. The lights function ok when I switch them on manually but do not come on automatically when I open (any) door. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds odd - so neither front nor back light comes on with any doors? But both work with the on/off switch. So the fuse must be fine.

If it's the switch - it would be extremely unusual for both switches to go bad at the same time in such a new car.

My recollection of older cars when I had to repair a door-switch not working - the switch simply completes the circuit to earth. Again - it would be extremely unusual for all 4 switches to go bad at the same time. Though - PRIUS might have some new artificial intelligence method of detecting that the door is opened - but I doubt it.

I assume the car is in good condition - ie no body rust?

You overhead button needs to be flat like this.

Door switches are in the door jams and are like little rubber mushrooms. Give them a little wiggle just in case they are stuck, unlikely, but just in case.

    Hope this helps :)

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your input. The answer was embarrassingly simple - switch the interior lights on in vehicle settings and choose your time. Easy when you know how

That's odd - they should have just worked. I've read every Gen 4 PRIUS post since the model came out - and this hasn't ever been an issue mentioned.

Or did you buy the car 2nd hand - maybe the previous owner had disabled it?

The car was an ex demonstrator so perhaps the setting had been changed by the . dealer though I can't think why

That makes sense. I remember a long time ago they'd take the bulb out of the interior light at car shows so the batteries didn't go flat with the doors open all day. If they can program it to not turn on - that's probably what they did, and forgot to fix it when they sold it to you.

My vehicle settings allow me to set a time for when they go off... after you exit the car and close the door. They fade out after about 15 seconds.

But there's nothing about turning them off permanently.

It looks like a dealer adjustment (or Carista?).

Thanks Alan. I've never seen that before. Maybe the U.S. cars don't have it? I wil look again.

That was Australian Manual (I got online - didn't check mine).

Here is USA Manual - seems much the same:

Nope. I don't have that. My settings only show the "'time elapsed before the interior lights turn off."

I wish I could disable the two lights in the front doors. (in the lower door panel.) They are always on when the door is open. No way to turn them off... Can I just take the bulb out? Will that cut the power?

You could try - but some modern cars are so "clever", you could find that it triggers a bulb failure warning. Which you could ignore - but then it wouldn't tell you if another more important bulb/s burn out.

Worst case the flux capacitor might be activated?
