Long story short - I got a 2015 Toyota Prius IV Solar Package without any damage from Insurance Auto Auction (IAAI). Had some undercarriage scrapes but nothing major.

The car has less than 30k miles on it and it was infested with dog hair when it arrived from Albuquerque NM to Sacramento CA.

I vacuumed out as much of the dog hair as possible by removing the rear seats, vacuuming the inside of the rear seats, the headliner, but it still has some sort of a dog urine odor? It's really hard to explain what it's from but the car was filthy.

7/11/18 - Arm And Hammer baking soda all over the carpet assembly, seems like it took some odor out, but that might be false due to it being 100 degrees outside.

7/12/18 - vacuumed the baking soda out and put a second layer for another 24 hours. Sprayed and cleaned the leather seats with a generic Walmart leather cleaner.

    Questions:
    1. Can leather retain odor?
    2. Can it be the floor mats though they don't have an odor when smelling them?
    3. Is it the headliner?
    4. Could there be urine that I can't see that is causing the smell?

I wanted to get one of those Ozone Purifier Generators but they're apparently illegal in California.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get yourself a can of "Ozium" deodorizer in the auto section or at any auto parts store. Spray it liberally, but carefull - it'll take your breath away. Leave the car closed for at least 12 hours, vents closed. Detail guys always did this at the dealership and it worked very well.

    Thanks for your input.

    Will something like this work?

I've seen some real terds roll into the dealership over the years. Trucks used by pig farmers, vans used by dog groomers - and if it doesn't work, I'd be shocked. Again, keep those doors closed and all vents closed. Put saran wrap over them if you have to and like I said, spray liberally. If you think you sprayed too much, give it another shot just to be safe.

Always worked great. Even gets the smell of weed out of your headliner, upholstery - but I was a kid then. :)

Will do. I found some on amazon for like 10$ for a pack of two, it's not a spray though. Does it have to be a spray one?

Didn't know there was anything other than a spray. I'll post a link to what the guys always used. But don't pay this much - it's cheaper at an auto store and don't get those tiny cans. Get the 8oz and use it all.

Among other things, I formulate air fresheners/odor eliminators for a living.

And yes, it does have to be the spray, at least if your intention is to remove some of the odor, rather than cover it up as it's emitted from the soiled areas (which is what gel air fresheners do). It's just not chemically possible for any odor eliminator to reduce/eliminate an odor without coming into direct physical contact with the odor emitting area. Dubit has the procedure to use exactly right - and please try hard not to breathe much of the spray.

If the spray doesn't work, that means that you have a concentrated area of animal urine either in the seat cushions or in the carpet/padding. (yes, the leather could retain odor also). I'd strongly recommend pulling out all the seats and the carpet to see if you can smell where the odor is coming from. (It's also possible that the headliner has absorbed some of the odor, but you can fix that with Febreeze if the Ozium doesn't get all of it).

You should try to clean the carpet once you have it out of the car (there are some great urine odor eliminator products out there), but if the urine has soaked into the carpet for years, the easiest/most efficient way to handle it is to replace the carpet and padding. Pulling the carpet out means you can clean it multiple times without worrying about rusting the floor pan, though, so if you have more time than money, don't give up on cleaning after just a time or two.

For soiled seats, after you clean the leather you can try to get a local upholsterer to replace the soiled part of foam cushions with new foam, or try to find seat replacements at a junk yard. Getting the smell completely out of foam without doing this is extremely unlikely - you just can't get enough odor eliminator in deep enough to do much good, but if you do use enough to completely saturate the foam, then you have to figure out a way to dry it quickly before it gets moldy (not easy if you don't live in a desert).

Will give "Ozium" a try. Thanks for the info.

Try a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. That will neutralize the acid in the urine.
But as Bobzchemist said, it's almost impossible to clean the foam. You'll have to get a tub and
let the foam sit in the vinegar/water so you can squish it several times, rinse and repeat.
It all depends on how much time you want to use on it and how much money you have to buy new ones.
White vinegar is cheap, about a dollar or two for a gallon.

Thank you so much for the thorough explanation and recommendation. I bought one of those febreeze odor eliminators - used about half of it and sprayed it on the headliner and seats, carpet, etc... Its super hot outside *104 today* so i can't really smell anything right now haha,

i did manage to pop the air cabin filter and holy crap that thing was filthy. The car only has 26k miles, and im thinking because it was in the desert prior to my purchase (Albuquerque NM) - it clogged that sucker up pretty fast. Bought 4 air cabin filters for all of our priuses, definitely didn't think they clog up that fast. Hopefully that helps?
