Doing my egr clean, pcv valve, oil catch can, etc. Should I be concerned with the amount of deposits in the intake? Burns a quart every 5k. Large amount of crust on the inside. 20180723_214100.jpg

I usually clean that area out with a rag before reassembly;).

You got an oil catch can installed:whistle:?

Might be worth checking into that (y).

How many miles on it? And just confirm, it's an 08, per your signature, or a 3rd gen, 2010 and up?

Yeah, that's pretty horrific looking, by the way.

It will not clean with a rag. It's a baked on crust. Going to wipe out what I can and call it good.

It's a 2010 with 191k. Was still getting 53 my last rank! Hoping after this maintenance were good for 300k!

Good for 300k or good until 300k?

How much oil does your 2010 consume? Depending on that answer and what your long term plans are for your Prius, I’d look to do the Egr circuit again before 300 k miles rolled around;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

You need to use brake cleaner or carb cleaner.

Won't it be bad for the engine to have all that debris go into it?

Sorry, should have explained. Spray on a rag, then wipe the area where the black carbon is.
Go in as far as you can and wipe out away from the head.
A little will get inside, but it didn't hurt mine. You can rotate the engine so the valves are closed then there
is less risk of any fluid going into the cylinder. If you have a compressor you can blow it out.
If I had a compressor, I would just spray and clean and blow out with compressed air.
Pull the plugs and crank the engine and blow it out. Since the Prius doesn't have a starter, it's difficult to do that.

    He says in first post.

Is there one position where all the intakes are closed?? Barring that yeah, check with a good light, clean the ports with valves that are closed, then rotate the engine and so on. As to what to use: brass bristle brush and strong cleaner, follow up with rags? Old toothbrushes (check they're not melting) brass bristle drill attached brush. It'll maybe be impossible to avoid the injectors, do a last clean and wipe off on them.

Just googling a good cleaner, this seems interesting:

CRC GDI IVD Intake Valve and Turbo Cleaner

With intake ports in that condition, the following also will definitely needs doing:

    1. Cleaning the intake manifold, especially the small EGR passages at each port, should be cleaned.
    2. Cleaning of the complete EGR circuit.
    3. Install of oil catch can in PCV circuit. Better replace the valve too.

Well its finally done. Egr cooler was completely clogged. Egr tube was 75% clogged. All intake ports completely clogged. Even the exhaust pipe after the egr cooler was restricted. New plugs, pcv valve, oil catch can, and cleaned everything. Thanks to nuts and bolts for their videos, and members on this site for their tips. Runs like a new car and have already seen an improvement in mpg.

    Wow, good work!

I never even thought to look at the exhaust at the cooler connection. Ours was just a youngster though.

Ok, I will ask the obvious question.
What, if anything, can we do to prevent that? Or maybe reduce the amount of it?

I realize the car has a lot of miles, but that sure is nasty looking.

Clean the circuit frequently and it looks like a lesser version of that;).

The gen4 has the egr circuit start after the cat, which I have been curious to see if that makes a difference, but the gen4’s are too low in mileage to compare at this point:(.

If we can find a member who has 100k miles or more on their gen4, I’d be willing to step and do the egr circuit cleaning in the name of data:).

Keep driving around Mickey’s fun land and the coast and maybe we’ll get our data point(y).

I'm glad you got the cooler cleaned out, and everything else. How fast do you drive? I'm wondering how much of a difference
that makes. Driving 55-60mph versus 70+mph.
It's nice when everything runs like new isn't it?

Thanks Ray. So you mean a simple bottle of Techron poured in the gas tank twice a year won't do it???

Or at least just check the connector pipe between EGR valve and intake manifold.
