I definitely wouldn’t make that assumption if I were actually considering a trade-in. :). Glad to hear they’ve been upgraded to acceptable.

Just drove 1,200 miles from Tampa to Philly in one day, 18 hours. No Tesla can do that. When a Tesla can refuel to 100% in 10 minutes and get a 500 mile range, I'll consider it.

Fuel mileage for the day was still 52.5 mpg with an average speed in the mid 70s.
There was a severe wreck on I81. Police had 2 exits CLOSED. I was planning to get gas at one of those exits. Really glad I kept 25 miles of electric in reserve. I needed it to make it to the next gas station.

  3. It doesn’t make any sense for me to trade in yet. Used S and 3 prices will keep dropping every year, so, it’s better for me to wait as long as I can. But even then, they’re still using low density battery tech, Li ion and not Mg ion, and goes to only 300 miles. That’s half of my range for more money. By the time that I get a used Tesla, I would likely have paid off (or nearly paid off) my hybrid, so, I would like to keep it and then see what the used Tesla market is like. Alternatively I may just punt on upgrading cars all the time because it just gets expensive...

I'd like to see what the income distribution is on the model 3 reservations. I think the ones who wouldn't get the full rebate would be in the minority. Maybe you're right since a lot of people are still waiting for the $35,000 base model.

I was planning to wait on line for the model 3, but they said they were going to deliver to employees first, then previous owners, then west to east, blah blah blah. I figured there was no way to get the full tax credit on the base model 3. I'm glad I didn't wait in line and put a $1,000 deposit down. I saved money by buying a Prime Premium for half the price of a $35,000 model 3.

I make no claim to judge groups of people or have absolute knowledge on a topic. Which is why my statements are regularly laced with the terms; like, possibly, maybe, most, majority, etc.

On this topic, people buying a new car, and then trading it in a year or two later is most likely not the norm among the car buying public.

When I started this thread, I should have said "trade" and not "trade-in" -- although the news story on which I was commenting was about what makes and models of cars people were trading-in when buying Tesla Model 3s.

I was also hoping that folks would pick up on the paragraph:

The Prius and Leaf are interesting, because they’re electrified vehicles that either lack being full EV, or lack anywhere near the range capability and qualities of the Tesla. It’s a shame, the Prius was just getting cool.

It's not every day that you see the words "Prius" and "cool" in the same sentence. :)

I do not have a horse in this race, but I do find it necessary to point out that if one shops wisely, the real-world, out-the-door cost of a new Prime is less than $30,000 while the same cost for a 3 will be north of $50,000 (after a waiting period measured at least in weeks.)
    That's a $20,000 delta....not $10,000 and you can probably buy a gently used Prime for $20,000.

If I were forced to buy one today, it would be the Prime.
If and when the base model 3 comes out it will be a tougher choice since the 3 offers some compelling abilities but also has equally compelling limitations.

    YMMV.

Hell yea I would if I could afford the $53,000 price tag.
