2005 Prius Gen 2. 171,000 miles...... It seems to happen (multiple times so far) when I slam on the breaks (like avoiding a dog last night)(may be coincidental and not related) The dash lights up like a Christmas tree, including the red triangle of death. The car keeps on running, but when I shut it off, the car will no longer start or go into R or D, it will go into neutral. I've tried to use 2 different ODB2 devices (not Prius specific devices) but there are no codes....Even with all the warning lights, I don't see a check engine light on. The car is dead for all practical purposes. To fix it and return it to a running state, I have to take the 3 white plastic wired connectors that go into the black module next to the 12 volt batter in the rear and the 2 white plastic wired connectors that go into the black box on top of the battery (with the red plastic cover over it). After doing this, it starts up and runs fine with no dash lights.....UNTIL THE NEXT RANDOM TIME IT DOES IT AGAIN. Any ideas?

BTW, I have a new green bean main battery that is only a few months old.

    Welcome!

The Green Bean battery is, unfortunately, not a new, but a used battery repaired with used parts.
When the red triangle comes on there are trouble codes that can be read with the proper scanning software.

The lights are your car crying for help. The codes tell you what the car sees the issue is located.

That's the problem, I can't get any codes....one obd2 say's link error and the other say's 0. If I shut the engine off and then hit start without hitting the break pedal to turn on ignition (I believe this is correct) then it won't do anything...I was under the impression that a standart odb2 would give out some info....but others say Prius specific odb's are needed which are expensive. I'm setting up a laptop and I have the cable and software to try to read it, but oh boy....

So as of this morning I couldn't clear the lights and get a restart by pulling the 3 connectors on the 12 battery (plastic modules on top and side) so I left them unplugged for now, will try later....I did notice that not all the lights are on now like they were but only 3 on the dash and the red car symbol on the monitor.....I'm suspecting the green bean main battery. I'll give Tim a call and see what he thinks.....

There is only one code that will cause a no restart condition. By disconnecting the 12 volt battery you clear the code and allow the car to restart until the code returns. The code is P0AA6 which denotes a high voltage leak. The likely sources are the HV battery, transmission, or AC compressor.

To my knowledge greenbean only sells refurbished batteries and it very well could be a loose bus bar causing this issue. Does it happen on bumps or wash boards in the road as well?

    Correct.

Only Toyota dealers or some independent shops that purchase from a dealer have new Toyota battery packs.
@2k1Toaster here is selling a kit of new cylindrical cells that gives you the equivalent of a new pack for less money. The link is in my signature.

He's awaiting inventory. T is my understanding that he will be an option again at the end of the year?

I know he has been placing larger orders by so far they are almost all sold before they reach the US. Since this battery has been showing signs of failing since March I figured they would not mind a wait for a real solution.

I totally agree and have spoken with him myself. I just thought if you were going to continue advertising for him that people would like to know the details of this solution possibly saving him the time of having to explain everything in detail again as he just did for me last week. At any rate, thanks for spreading the word. I also found out about him by you recommending him in other places on the forum.

    Thanks.
It is difficult to know who can wait and who cannot.

This solution is new enough to be proven bit too new to be well known. I do not have any idea of the shipment scheduling either to predict stock. I suspect the ongoing trade wars complicate things too although the US price has not yet risen.

I make knowledge of the solution available ane let @2k1Toaster sort out the details accurately as needed.
