Engine died, had it rebuilt, now they say the battery is gone.

    I had an engine fail on my 2007 Prius, so I bit the bullet and bought and installed a rebuilt engine. Prior to taking it in to have the engine replaced, the hybrid battery was working fine. Now the place tells me that after they put in the new engine the hybrid battery is telling them it is dead. That seems like an awfully bad coincidence, the engine and battery dying at the same time... and I drove it in there without any battery warnings.

    1. Odometer reading?
    2. What was wrong with the original engine?
    3. How is it that you were able to drive the car to the shop with a failed engine?
    4. Over what period of time was the car down for repairs? A long period of inactivity can induce a marginal traction battery to fail.
    5. Was the replacement engine rebuilt or was it a used engine from a totaled vehicle?
    6. How does the shop know that the battery has failed? What DTC was logged?
    7. Maybe the shop messed with the traction battery interlock, and incorrectly reinstalled that.

    How long did the repairs take? If a long time that'd explain it... Charging and balancing via Prolong system will fix it... On other hand mechanics could of blown a fuse or screwed up some wires/connectors? Was it engine and transmission, or just engine?

    welcome!
    2007 prius, a lot of failing batteries. engine is more unusual i think. might as well put in a new battery, then the only things left will be the tranny ($5,000.) brake actuator ($2,500.) and a/c compressor ($2,500.)

    I agree with #7. Some shops that are not familiar with working on a Prius will not install the interlock properly (after they remove it).

    It's also a possibility for an 11 years old battery to fail after 1 week of not driving it.
