Daily Charging Cost

    I was wondering much it was costing me per day to charge my 2018 Prius Prime at home.
    I bought a Kill-A-Watt (about $20) and set the price from my electric co-op's bill.

    Here's a (kinda blurry... it was early morning) pic of the cost display after two days' charging.

    That's about 91 cents/day to charge it. So, I'm very happy with that knowledge.

    Gas is $2.52 right now and has been fairly flat for months. I've been experimenting with driving modes during the commute and have been getting about 140 mpg round trip. Recently I've been driving in EV mode until I hit the highway and then back into EV mode when I exit the highway.

    Still need to do the math to figure out what it costs per day to drive on average. Waiting until I fill up again to so I have accurate numbers.

    It is displaying $1.81. The total cost of charge for two days. Assuming OP did two full charge, each was about 6.5kWh. So for 13kwh charge, it cost him $1.81. The cost of electricity is 1.81/13= $0.139 /kWh.

    Currently the price of electricity in Alberta is cheap - so I pay .38 cents/full charge. Wahoo!

    My solar array produces extra power that is not sent back to the grid so my cost is $0.00.

    If you don't count my investment in solar that had a 6.5 year pay off.

    Net Zero Cost.

    If I use grid cost in Michigan at $0.169 per kWh. So $1.04 per charge saved.

    Salamander_King is correct - or close enough. We're zoned agricultural so there are several different fees and schedules used to arrive at at an actual per kWh rate.

    After 3 days I'm looking at $2.78 or about 93 cents/daily charge. I'm going to leave the kill-a-watt in place for another two days and then remove it from the wall (I'll probably test out what other things in the house are costing me).

    I'm guessing we're somewhere in the middle of electrical rates in the USA. It could be much worse - I think Hawaii has very high rates, for example... might be 2x mine.

    Ah...NO, bisco lives in high electricity rate area. He means 24 cents / kWh. Mine is around 20 cents/kwh. At around this rate, I am at break even point for HV vs EV. So there is no saving. For bisco, it cost more to run on EV than HV.

    28C here in Northern CA with PG&E. So I installed solar which would cover 100%. Hopefully I just pay $20 a month fees and solar system would pay off in 6 years or even less.

    Oh! Gotcha. That's a lot. Our current electricity rate is capped at 6c/KWh and my wife got permission from her employer that she can plug in at work so we're set up reasonably well on the cost-to-charge front. The downside is that our province has no electric car rebates of any kind...

    we buy lotl of our electricity. the grid is old, and we've spent a lot on updating and converting coal to natural gas.
    part of the problem is getting environmental permitting for new infrastructure and 'nimby' as always.

    plus, the limousine liberals don't like looking at windmills.

    6c/KWh is amazing. At that cost there is no incentive to save electricity. When we first moved to NE, the house we bought had electric baseboard heaters for whole house. The first winter month after we turned on heat, the electric bill was something like $600. Our current house have oil burning boiler for heat, but we still use quite bit of electricity. I was looking into solar panel, but with our usage, the payback period is more than 15 years. I am hoping to retire before that time frame and move to somewhere cheaper to live, like Canada. ;)

    agreed, i'm only there during the winter. it rarely gets over 80. mostly 70's.
