Actually, although Scholes first had a similar layout, Remington swapped the R and . giving us QWERTY. Scholes had QWE.TY

The QWERTY keyboard, so named for the first six characters of the uppermost alphabetic row, was invented during the course of the typewriter's development. The first model constructed by Sholes used a piano-like keyboard with two rows of characters arranged alphabetically as follows:

    3 5 7 9 N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
    2 4 6 8 . A B C D E F G H I J K L M

Typebars were attached to the circumference of a metal ring such that they would strike a common center.
Schwalbach later replaced the piano-like keys with "buttons" and positioned them into four banked rows. The mechanics of the machine, however, made the alphabetical arrangement problematic. The typebars were attached to the circumference of a metal ring, forming a "basket". When a key was pressed, the corresponding typebar would swing upwards, causing the print head to strike at the center of the ring. Gravity would then return the typebar to its initial position. The implication of this design, however, was that pressing adjoining keys in quick succession would cause their typebars to collide and jam the machine. To mitigate this problem, keys were reordered using analysis of letter frequency and trial and error. Densmore asked his son-in-law, a Pennsylvania school superintendent, what letters and combinations of letters appeared most often in the English language. Typebars corresponding to letters in commonly occurring alphabetical pairs, such as S and T, were placed on opposite sides on the ring. The keyboard ultimately presented to Remington was arranged as follows:

    2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - ,
    Q W E . T Y I U O P
    Z S D F G H J K L M
    A X & C V B N ? ; R

After it purchased the device, Remington made several adjustments—including switching the period and "R" keys—which created a keyboard with what is essentially the modern QWERTY layout.

This thread just reminded my. My neighbor ticked off his cat.
The cat sat in the roof of his pickup truck and swatted my neighbor if he tried to get close. I guess a cat on the roof can be a theft deterrent??

    Yes.

When we were children, about 1959ish I guess, our elderly neighbours shifted out and Mum&Dad bought some of their 2nd hand furniture. And - with it, came a TYPEWRITER - which was ancient even then. Heavy as Uranium.

It didn't have a "1" key, and I'm fairly sure it didn't have lower-case - or the lower-case mechanism was broken. It might have been a REMINGTON - but then it mightn't. Dad, who was a good typist, typed Church Minutes on it for a while, and it was all Upper-Case when he used it. He bought a better one after a few years.

We children had fun with it though. Kids and their keyboards.

Get a picture of the cat on the roof, talk to the neighbor, explain that you’re going to a body shop, should be about 500$, let the neighbor know they are paying, the neighbor will either keep the cat in or exchange it for new, don’t shoot the cat, do talk to the neighbor.

Record your conversation with the neighboring case they are offensive.

Keep in mind this is a criminal offense in a lot of states. You will need to be in a one party consent state or a purely public forum. Asking on their porch in a two party stage can mean jail time, not just a fine.

In an area open to public view and both parties aware of recording...this is a criminal offense in a lot of states?

Your location is shown as California, which is one of the dozen "all-parties consent" states.
California Recording Law | Digital Media Law Project

"Area open to public view" doesn't cut it. Neither does "both parties aware", it requires actual consent, though your state supreme court has indicated that a certain repeating audio beep that all parties can hear will suffice.

(There is a handy comprehensive-looking 50-state chart and discussion posted as 'LAWS-ON-RECORDING-CONVERSATIONS-CHART.pdf", but because it is posted by a specific law firm, I'll not post the direct link. Interested parties can very easily find it.)

I have looked at the laws in California before (my home state). There is much ambiguity in the language and I have not seen that a porch, for example, would be considered private. Same with "both parties aware" - what constitutes consent is not clearly explained.

    From your article:

What constitutes “consent” is also an issue of contention when you are considering recording a conversation. In some states, “consent” isgiven if the parties to the call are clearly notified that the conversation will be recorded, and they engage in the conversation anyway. Their consent is implied. For example, we have all experienced calling a customer service department only to hear a recorded voice warning, “This call may be recorded for quality assurance or training purposes.” It is usually a good practice for practitioners to let the witness know they arerecording the conversation to accurately recall and commemorate the testimony being given – such as during the taking of a witness’statement.

The laws in CA are pretty clear IMHO. The fuzzy parts are the same as any legal definition. The word "reasonable" is why you pay a lawyer big bucks and it can go either way.

If you want to be safe just announce you're recording. If you think they'll murder you for asking, which seems unreasonable, you also get an exemption. If you conduct your conversation by screaming at eachother and making a scene, also no expectation of privacy. This is the kind of stuff lots of people accidentally mess up and it can be terrible. The recording you collected is null and can't be used as evidence. The defendant now knows you were recording and the relationship will change and extraction of once free flowing conversation will close up. You don't get what you wanted in the first place, and you may go to jail for a month or two.

I've got security cameras that record video and audio on my property along with signs around it saying you're being recorded with a picture of a camera. You have no reasonable expectation of privacy anywhere on my property outside the house so that'd be fine. As long as they aren't blind I suppose.

First rule for handling unauthorized animals on your property is don't ask for advice on a predominantly liberal forum. ;)

"That still leaves some gray area. In your house, you can reasonably expect privacy. But what about conducting a loud conversation on your porch? If you don't want to be recorded, a judge might say, go inside. Or say two people are chatting in low voices on a bench in a public park, with no one else around. On the one hand, they're in a public park. On the other, if one interlocutor reasonably expects privacy since no one else is within earshot, the recording could be illegal."
James O'Keefe NPR video: Why do 12 states still make it illegal to tape people without their knowledge?

Your state has many court decisions on this topic already, so tread lightly until you have explored further.

Yes, I’ve seen that google top return search.

Snark not required, hopefully not directed at me. Please show cases about porch interaction and recording consent by verbal and visual declaration and jail time. I have seen none. Have you?

Oh, this thread is making me sad. It's just a freaking cat and a freaking car! Now, there are elaborate debates on legal ramifications about a neighborly conversation. Unfortunately, this is the reality of our modern society, esp. in the USA. I know I'm stating the obvious problem without offering any solution, but just needed to rant so I can get on with my day.

Yeah, I'd talk to the neighbor to come up with a solution together. But don't shoot the cat. He/she is just doing the cat thing, means no harm, and doesn't deserve that kind of cruelty.

Would also repeat, do not kill vertebrates that are not an imminent harm to you and respect the law.

Although outside cats are responsible for the deaths of a very high number of birds and other native species, it is not the fault of the cat, but the owner who chooses to let the cat outside.

Good luck, however, on changing public sentiment on this one.

Here in the UK it is the property owner's responsibility to keep animals off his property, not the animal owner's.
So for example if neighbours dog jumps your fence and vacates it's bowels on your lawn (assuming you don't want that to happen) then it is your responsibility to put up a bigger fence. With cats it almost impossible to keep them away so accept it as a fact of life.
Along with cats and birds during the day, we have several hedgehogs, a pair of foxes and two or three cats that visit our garden at night who are all welcome and get fed by SWMBO every night.
Coincidentally the cats never sit on the car (although the birds leave there mark during the day :(), so maybe the way to keep them off the car is to put some food down for them ?
Cats are very territorial so maybe a cat of your own would keep the neighbour's cat away, but then of course you would have to train your cat (again almost impossible) not to sit on the car.

You could duct tape a hose to a step ladder aimed at the favorite spot. You'll need a remote control hose valve, they have these. When you see the offense get your phone video going first and then hit the button.
