Ipad mount for Gen 3 glove compartment

I constructed a mounting plate for the top glove compartment section of our 2012 hatchback so that whoever is in the passenger’s seat can use the map display of an iPad (or similar tablet) for navigation. The mount can swivel for either landscape or portrait orientation as well as shifting the viewing angle so that the passenger views it directly. This keeps the tablet off the lap and is hands-free so that the passenger can also access paper maps, etc.



The mounting hardware was originally intended to be clamped to the posts supporting the front seat headrests, which would allow the tablet to be viewed from the back seat. The mounting plate has wood projections to which those clamps tighten down on, and the entire assembly is held in place by wooden prongs that insert into the side holes where the where the cover of the glove compartment usually fastens.



The mounting hardware allow for tablets up to at least 10.5” to be displayed at any angle.

 

Thank you, bisco! But this mod actually has two completely different design goals: First is use the iPad as a GPS/map/traffic info display whilst driving.
Second is use as a test bed for an aircraft flight jnfo panel that would replace the traditional set of instruments in an airplane cockpit. Software available for Apple iPads uses Bluetooth to connect to a quite small sensor unit that provides turn-and-bank, altitude, attitude, airspeed, rate-of-climb, and all the necessary flight info. So, the plan is to put that sensor unit on the hood of the Prius and then play with the customizable cockpit display of the flight info whilst sitting in the passenger seat and having “she-who-must-be-obeyed” drive the car. Finally, i must shift the sensor and iPad system to the aircraft so that I am familiar with the display while doing flight tests (reduces cognitive workload). But compared to building a traditional cockpit panel and making all the various necessary physical, electical, and pneumatic connections, the sensor + iPad approach is way simpler, and even more importantly for a Part 154 Ultralight, way lighter.

 

Nuts. Cannot edit my earlier comment, but ultralights are regulated under Part 103 , not part 154, of the FAA regulations. My bad. Weight limits are 254 lbs total, though, so using an iPad connected wirelessly to the sensor unit rather than a full physical instrument panel would be a significant weight savings.
