Okay, about 600 trouble free miles now, no codes, no trouble. Funny thing is, seems like the mpg is going up, a little. 57+mpg one way (100 miles highway) and then down to 52mpg after the return trip.

Okay all- about 3400 trouble free miles, until tonight... My wife told me the check engine light came on as she pulled out of her parking stall at the office, and then the car started "dragging" and when she pressed the gas pedal it was weak. She called me, I was a block away with my trusty new scangauge - and I pulled the following code: P2102. The main battery was down to 1 bar, and when I powered up the car, the ice ran until it charged the battery to 4 bars (50%). No other codes, and I took a picture of the dash lights- only the check engine light, which went off when I cleared the code. I guess I'm going to try to drive it 40 miles home... Any ideas?

Ok, looking back at this thread, this is the same code it threw earlier (throttle control motor?). As per Patrick's suggestion, I will try to clean the throttle plate and shaft and see if that helps. Will brake cleaner to the job, or does it have to be throttle body cleaner? I haven't looked at this engine much, but the throttle body should be easy to find, I'm guessing...

If you search this site, there is a detailed DIY post on throttle body cleaning. Hope this cures your issues!

Yes, you need to go out and buy a can of throttle body cleaner. Brake cleaner will strip away all lubricants while throttle body cleaner will leave a lubricant residue.

Use the minimum amount of throttle body cleaner needed to clean. I suggest you remove the air cleaner housing so that you can reach the throttle plate with a clean cloth that you've sprayed cleaner fluid on to.

The instructions on the can may suggest that you liberally spray cleaner into the throttle assembly. Do not do this for a couple of reasons:

    1) dirty cleaner fluid will drip down into the throttle motor shaft, contaminating it. A Toyota TSB provides this advice.
    2) cleaner fluid sprayed everywhere will contaminate the mass air flow sensor

If you have the idea to clean the MAF sensor, use only MAF sensor cleaner since throttle body cleaner will leave lubricant residue which is not helpful on the sensor. Remove the MAF sensor held on with two screws, then use the MAF sensor cleaner to clean the wires and the amber lump.

Or buy spray carb/choke cleaner. Cut up old t shirt in 3 inch wide long strips. While holding butterfly open shove strip in far as you can. Soak rag with carb cleaner. With gloves using soaked strip scrub the tb out as best you can. Pull out strip and throat will be dry as a bone and repeat. Don't forget to flush out the pvc tube in the back of the TB. Pull the big hose off and with strip in flush that joint out.
Don't forget to tighten the air cleaner throat O ring 10 mm bolt. That keeps the air cleaner air tight to the tb.
    Its under the air cleaner.

Spray lube the big spring on the outside end of the butterfly.

Okay - thanks for the advice, all. Drove the car another couple hundred miles and seems fine, but I'll go get some cleaner and get to work this weekend...

How would you test the throttle body control motor?
