My catalytic converter was recently stolen and I have been unsuccessful in sourcing a replacement since I live in California and only "approved" cats CARB can be sold. I'm wondering if anyone has a old catalytic that has gone bad that they have laying around in the Socal area. So that I could drive that car while I source a replacement.

This is the 2nd Gen forum and that's a 3rd gen Cat
Unless I'm missing something that's not going to work.
EDIT: I was missing something - the vehicle model in their bio

    --

Try to lock up your new Cat when you get it, I've seen people get theirs stolen multiple times because the thieves hit the same houses/areas

CA and their silly smog rules - some I agree with, others like recycling a working Cat I disagree

I have a Gen 3 and Gen 2. Probably will never get the gen4, don't like the styling.... The car in question is a gen2. The cat was stolen when I went LA and left the car overnight.

People want way too much money for used cats at 800 plus dollars and a new one is not that much difference. Heck, i'd get a PO box in Nevada and drive over just to get a aftermarket one. But, id like to drive the car in the meantime. I just cant believe how much these cats are...... I was able to source a gen 3 pack for less then 500 dollars.

I just wonder, what kind of chain saw they use for all this, and people in the neighborhood, didn't know.
You can get used ones from a salvage yard I think for less.

California salvage yards won't sell you a used Cat unless they want to risk being shut down. Ebay is the same, they block the sale. (It's illegal in our state).

Maybe road trip it to a Nevada salvage yard to buy a used cat?

Dxta: A pipe cutter like the one in the picture won't make much noise, and only 4 bolts hold it in place, easy enough to remove

Jose: Did they saw it off, or unbolt it - I've been considering locking mine up but not sure how they grab them

excelexhaust.com is in Canada, sold me a gen 2 cat free delivery for 100 bucks. Doubt they care about California rules but even if they do not want trouble I bet they would work with you for a Nevada solution.

I've seen the cheap ebay cats work for a while depends on if your valve stem guide seals allow oil to burn.

Ebay cats $125: work short term with oil consumption issue which will eventually burn out your cheaper cat. They almost always send wrong o2 sensors with it and those cheap o2 sensors pop up codes same day or next.

magna flow cat $200+: is by far the best cheap alternative with the right o2 sensor. I've seen them last couple of years or more without the oil consumption issue on the engine. I own a lot of prius so I would know...

NOTE: WHICHEVER ROUTE YOU GO YOU'LL NEED TO ADDRESS THE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE WHETHER SMALL OR BIG FIRST.
