Are people really getting 40+ MPG in Gen 2?

To be fair, when some of the first Prii came out people who drove them were really into their hypermiling and that gave Prii a bad name for constipation makers. I've had to go around enough people going 50 in a 55 zone back in the day. Now that Prii are more commonplace and more and more people drive them "normally" we still need to contend with the reputation formed early on. Such is life. I like the sleeper aspect of the Prius. People always underestimate what it can do because most people driving them are calm and conservative drivers, but when the situation calls for it we can go from 65mph to 95mph in a hurry. At Least I can in my '07. It's not a super-fast asphalt burner, but it is a fully functional highway going vessel that can get out of its own way just fine.

I am consistently getting 51/52 MPG with my 2005 that has 118,000 miles. I run my Prius with Continental True Contact Tire (eco tires).

I get 56 - 58 in the warmer months, and 48 in the winter here in MN. I did get 61 the first summer I owned it. It's a 2011.

This was me this afternoon at my local garage about to refuel. I was down to my last bar on the fuel gauge, but crucially it wasn’t blinking yet.

I’d done 606 (UK) miles on the last tank of fuel with 63mpg (UK) showing on the MFD. This is all commuting miles, with me employing hypermiling techniques (without holding up traffic or driving like Ms Daisy). My Prius is 10 years old!
My Prius now has 106,889 miles on the odometer.

I’d like to cock a snook at all those trolls across the World Wide Web who continue to spread cruel myths and glaring untruths at this wonderful vehicle.
It still has its original HV battery, nothing has broken (apart from a mechanical water pump at 99k miles - and I still drove it for a week before I took it in for repairs at Toyota).

This is one tough cookie! 606 miles from 43.8 litres (that was the fill up today) is just.....wow for such an amazing vehicle. I of course doff my hat to the the designers of the highly understated (by most ignorant motorists) Hybrid Synergy Drive...!!!

    p.s. 63mpg (UK) = 52.5mpg (US).
Note: We don’t have the infamous fuel bladder in UK Gen 2 Prii, so we get to use the entire capacity of the fuel tank

Could it be how you are measuring MPG? Are you actually doing the math?
I let the car do it. Assuming it’s average consumption is accurate. Though it is a fact that the mileage computer does not figure any of the gas consumed while the car is not moving into its calculation according to The owners manual. So sitting in a parked car running the A/C in 100+ doesn’t change my mpg however does reduce the miles /tank. Add to that the fuel bladder resulting in irregular volumes of gas being pumped into it depending on the temp of the gas and the air etc. it’s tough to do the math without averaging several tankfuls

Here in California I have Prius 2007 with around 123k miles on it.
My absolute record is 74MPG on about 40 miles distance. This is when I am traveling from up north to LA.
On highways depending on traffic I usually get around 63mpg if I am not rushing.
When I am rushing I usually don't go below 52mpg.
However in the city without blocking the traffic my avrage is between 44-48mpg.

I can be averaging 52.5 mpg and be over 250 miles into my tank of gas and camp in my gen 2 over night with the climate controls set and it absolutely does count it against my fuel economy displayed. I have went to sleep with a 50+ mpg average and woke up with it reading anywhere from 10 mpg to 30 mpg depending on how many miles have been accumulated since the last reset and how long I sleep. I loose an average of atleast .3 mpg each time my ICE cycles to replenish the HV battery durning the night as long as I have it some miles on the average before parking. If it has just been reset and I have just filled up before camping out, I have woke up to single digits for my average and watched it drop several mpg each time that my ICE cycles. So no matter what anyone tells you or what the book says, the gen 2 does calculate fuel economy while parked and takes into consideration idle time in the U.S. I even tried turning my Prius off after getting to the camp site and then turning it back on. If it says ready and your ICE is cycling, it will decrease your overall average on the display. I reset my trip when I fill up and document the amount of fuel I put in. Then when I fill back up I see how many miles I went and how many gallons of fuel I used to do so, and it seems pretty accurate but not flawless. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I've been playing with this. Did a dose back in May I think it was, and saw an apparent improvement. Just did another dose, still monitoring, but looks promising, at least a 5 percent improvement.

Thanks for throwing in, but that response was worth it least two bits :).

I’m going to have to do more testing myself now. By the way, where are you running the ICE all night to maintain heat? And if so what temperature? Was it outside?

Hey Paul, thank for your interest in my adventure and pursuing your own experiments as well! Penelope and I have been traveling the Rocky Mountains. Usually, I lay down with it utilizing the AC compressor because the temp outside still requires it to be blowing cold to keep me comfortable. By the middle of the night it has dropped 40° Fahrenheit which at some point the Prius knows to switch to heat by itself to maintain the set 68° in the cabin. Then by morning when the sun tries to cook me out of bed it is back to blowing cold air to keep me comfortable. It's better than central air at home which requires being switched from heating to cooling manually. The gen 2 Prius does it all automatically! Setting the climate controls before bed and allowing the Prius to maintain a set temp for you also prevents waking up to condensation and moisture all over the inside of your Prius as long as your AC setting is enabled when you set it to Auto. It will change vents and fan speed all by itself to maintain the temp you set it too. For example, I noticed when it goes from AC to heat, the fan ramps back up and it goes from the dash vents to the floor vents. Call me a chicken if you want, but I have woke up to bears playing with their reflection in my window tint. So between that and all the bugs, I wouldn't dream of sleeping with my windows down or my doors unlocked. My Prius has been "ready" for 3 almost 4 days now with climate controls set without rest and I still have 2 blips of fuel after climbing pikes peak to the summit in her. 3 nights of camping in her, 3 days of driving her over 300 miles without once turning her off, and she still has fuel? It's really quite amazing if you ask me!

I watched a youtube video from a guy who camps out in his G2 Prius. He calls it a $3 hotel, because that's how much fuel he uses overnight while he sleeps.

I hope some pictures of your setup are in the works! I love it!
I too have wandered many trails mostly the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite, bought a home in Fresno to make day hiking on the weekends a regular event.
I’ve been wishing the Prius had a button to raise it 4inches to clear a deep rut in the road.
Also love the Harbor Freight inverter I wired to the 12volt battery for all of those things that need it.
Glad you’ve expanded the powers of your Pri to get you where your heart calls you.
