Isn't production supposed to keep growing? If so, they need to keep hiring, opening new locations, and finding permanent locations for inventory.

I've seen other brands stuffing inventory on vacant lots, but only on a temporary basis.

That photo isn't at a factory, but at a port where many of those cars are only a few miles from dealers waiting for them.

For Tesla's final deliveries, the buyer's schedule is also a factor.

Sure, and they will be sending production worldwide in the future, rather than crammed into NA only.
Which also means less stress on each individual piece of the delivery infrastructure.
As for seeing other brands do the same thing, why do you think this isn't on a temporary basis? Tesla is growing, learning and improving all the time.

it makes sense when you consider the number of dealers compared to legacy. they store hundreds of cars at each location that haven't even been sold yet. someone has to pay for that.

Man, the fud / anti Elon Musk is sure picking up the pace - the more & more 3's that get delivered. Issues - albeit some are real - get REALLY overblown.

There are 22 steps up the shorter scaffold and they get one step per day. <tick tick tick tick ...>

I went to the farmer's market in Palo Alto today, a distance of about 10 miles from my home in Sunnyvale. Along the way I saw 11 model 3, 10 model S, one model X, and maybe 4 green Gen2 Prius. Guess what I was driving...

Good point about worldwide deliveries, I hadn't been thinking in those terms. It also seems that Tesla has started batch production so my assumption that every car coming down the assembly line had a specific buyer is no longer true. Thus, more inventory than previously expected, and a different delivery model such as this past weekend's "Teslathon".

Side note, Tesla has always done batch production.

Will be interesting someday when they can just put in the buyer's address and the car drives itself to their address with all the paperwork/document signing right on the display that has to be completed before you can drive/control it.

I agree, Tesla has always done batch production to keep costs down. The current promotion applies only to those people who have already configured their car and put down a non-refundable $2500 on their order. The cars you see in the pictures are already sold. The current promotion is an attempt to get as many cars as possible into the hands of people who have purchased them before the end of the quarter. At this point, Tesla does not build model 3s for "inventory." Having unsold stock on hand at the end of this quarter would hurt their bottom line and Elon intends to show as large a profit as possible on Sep 30, 2018.

    Hi Mike,

Still have the 12 year old green Prius. Maybe if you tell Elon to add green as an available color...
